Bag End Stack in the House!

I'm sure the 600+ watts at 2 ohms will be perfect. I just hope the tone stack is somewhat similar to the BH-250.... simple 3 band EQ, compressor, etc.

Since you brought up compression, what do you guys think would be a good single rack space compressor for $500 or less. I am running a Demeter pre, QSC power and 2 15 BEs primarily with a 5 string active Bass.

Hey guys,

Nice looking tread with some great looking rigs here!

I have to admit... I've always been interesed in trying some Bag End cabs :p and I had a few question before I lay my money down on it.

I currently play Bergies (ip112 stack and ht115 stack) and love the tone and I'm really not looking to "replace" anything with something "better". It's just that I think I've got some gas to add something different to the stable.

So I was thinking about an S12-B/S15B stack. I would be using my BN6 and Walkabout head or possibly a T-funk to drive the rig, playing primarily blues, funk and rock.

What kind of differences in tone/volume should I expect in comparison to the bergs? I'm looking for something that's got a good "homegrown" vintage vibe to it, similar to the way I'd expect a sealed cab to sound, but still Hi-Fi.

Any opinions are much apreciated as always! :D

Pat.

The easy answer is DBX 160A. I would suggest you take the Demeter with you and visit a high end Pro Audio outfit though. When I was running the 201 (either the 1 ru or the 1.5 ru) I found that putting the signal through out board gear generally resulted in less than stellar results. The Demeter on it's own has that special something - pristine audio quality. It takes outboard gear of a very special nature to keep up ... Demeter does make a comp in rack format but it's pretty expensive IIRC. I was real disappointed in the stompable Demeter. Any compresor I can detect is not a compressor I'll be comfortable living with. At least in my bass rig. I do love a nice squashy compressor for my Tele when going for the modern country chimey squashy thing...

for rack compressors I dig Ashly gear. Not sure the new prices, but if you watch eBay, the mono/single channel Ashly compressors come up within your range.

Pat, the S12 and S15 are rear ported cabs. As far as volume and tone, that is what I spent the 90s with (pushed with 250 watts between them). I was never looking for more volume in the Alt. Rock, Blues, Jam stuff I was doing. These were the Hifi cabs of the late 80s IMHO. Chick Corea's band including John Patitucci were using misc Bag End cabs when they started in the mid 80s.

I can't compare the cabs... but your brief description of what you are looking for makes me think you'd dig the S12/S15 stack :bassist:

One of the other options I was thinking about was ordering an S15-B and a powered S15-XB. Then I could use my all time fave front end... Millenia TD-1 for the stack, or have a killer sinlgle 15" rig.

Any thoughts on how a powered S15-XB that would match up with a TD-1? How does that power section sound? Are they putting attenuators on the coax yet?

These 15" cabs just look so appealing to me with their small size and oiled birch construction. And nothing I've tried seems to come close to my TD-1 Berg mini-stack in the tone department.

If that rig would work out, I would be willing to sacrifice my HT115's and the amps I use for them, and just rock my TD-1 Berg 12"/Bag 15" mini-stacks

Any thoughts?

You should give Bag End a call, last time I spoke with them about their powered systems they were only using them in sound reinforcement not in bass cabs. And as far as I know they do not have plans for attenuators in the XD models.

Like I said contact them they are very helpful and accomodating.

+1. When I called Bag End a while back, I spoke with a very polite and friendly admin assistant, who put my call through to the head Bag End engineer, Dan. He answered all my questions about the Speakon plates. Then I placed my order with the equally nice Tara for the replacement plates. Very helpful folks. My Bag End customer service experience was very much like my calls to Genz-Benz. An American company, fairly small, and with employees that really do customer service the way everyone used to do it in the U.S., but very few do anymore.

agreed, I had nothing but great communications with them in the early 90s when I first hooked up with them and again now that I've come back.

A great company to deal with!

came to my senses. This stack just rocks and the micro head with 1 cab does phenomenally well on it's own. One of these is going to become an S15X-D pretty quickly. Cool thing with the EA is that with 2 instruments plugged in, the 2 channel pre can be used as a mixer. So I can run acoustic guitar and bass through it at the same time. 1 amp, 2 guys at the wine bar ... ag through the s15-D is suprisingly OK. I think the addition of the tweet will make it way better than OK. I expect I could carry a small mixer, the EA and a reverb unit and do bass, guitar and vocal through this thing ... I know that doesn't sound real exciting but for a guerilla, yet high quality sounding two guy's travelling light thing - pretty darned cool!

I have three S15-D's that are currently stacked vertically. I like the coupling and push in the low end if I put the third on the floor next to the 2X stack, but it looks a bit odd and I still can't sit my heads on it, so I'm planning on getting a fourth S15-D soon to make a nice little 2x2 wall of Bag End doom! Their high sensitivity, power handling, treble response, and punch continues to amaze me. As you start multiplying the number of these cabs, you can really starting getting big low end response, but it remains wicked tight and punchy... very cool.

So a Shuttle 6 will do well with a pair of 15s? From the specs, it seems that the G•B could potentially overpower the cabs.

And they sound full-range? They cut through? Pardon the n00b questions, but a 2-15 stack isn't exactly de rigueur for the TalkBass crowd.

You won't overpower them with that head unless your amp is clipping. Two S15-D's handled the bridged output of my GK2001RB very nicely. They have excellent high end extension and midrange response (they sound more like 12's). They roll off below 50Hz, but they are nice and tight, and the low end really beefs up when you go to two or more cabs.

Has anyone hear run a Ric 4003 though any Bag End stuff? I love my Mesa gear but I'm always curious.

I have Mesa and Bag End gear and on some days it's a tough call but I tend to use the Bag End cabs with an Ampeg V4B when I play the 4001 C64 Rickenbacker strung with flats.

There is just something about a Rickenbacker's mids that are somewhat, IMHO + IME, shall I venture synergistic when paired with a pair of Bag End 12's. That said there is also something synergistic and righteous when I run that same Rickenbacker C64 through my Mesa M6 Carbine Combo.

However for a pure chest thumping punchy midrange methinks I have to give the nod to my Orange OR120 with the 2x15 Reflector cab.

FWIW I prefer the Mesa and the Orange with roundwound strings.

Cheers,

Mr. BEAR
