Bag End Stack in the House!

I had no idea these were so popular. I've been playing mine for years. The bottom one is a home made cabinet with a Bag End driver.

I bet with that CMD121P and that BE S15D you could conquer the world.

So a Shuttle 6 will do well with a pair of 15s? From the specs, it seems that the G•B could potentially overpower the cabs.

And they sound full-range? They cut through? Pardon the n00b questions, but a 2-15 stack isn't exactly de rigueur for the TalkBass crowd.

JB, several of us have already said in the thread that the Shuttle 6.0 works very well with the S15 stack. I'll reiterate that point.

What's your definition of full-range? The S15-D sounds mellow, with surprising mids and highs. The S15X-D has the additional treble extension from the coax horn. No, I can't say either cab sounds like my Carvin LS1503LF cab with a midrange driver, or my Dr.Bass BL1260 with midrange. But the point is that different bass cabs have different voicings and sound different. The sound of the Bag End S15 cabs is surprisingly good and very musical, belying the small size and relatively simple design.

The S15's are rated at 200 watts continuous and 400 peak. I don't see any problem with running 600 watts from a Shuttle 6 into a stack of two. Truth be told, the power ratings of the Shuttle 6 and the Bag S15s match up great. 375 watts into 8 ohms, 600 into 4.

Bag owners have run big pre/power amps into the S15s with no problem. The main thing is not to overly boost the lows at very high volume, but that's true of any cab.

Also, to say that Talkbass players would prefer any one or two configurations of speakers is pretty much a noob notion, to be sure. There are quite a few TB'ers who have 1x15 or 2x15 cabs and love the sound. If you're just starting out and haven't played or owned much equipment, you don't have anything to go on other than what you read. I've owned about every configuration of speaker diameters imaginable, and I still like the sound of fifteens. The Bag S15s are just one nice sound, with either one or two.

A bunch of stuff.

No need for the patronizing tone, pal. I asked some questions to clarify some things before I seriously considered such a rig. I meant 'noob' in terms of new to Bag End. As for the rest, look at my join date or actually read my other posts before you assume I'm just starting out, or am horribly wrong to notice that TB gear tastes tend to move in waves.

I didn't know we were going by peak power rating instead of continuous. Pardon me for noticing that 600>400, and not wanting to damage expensive gear. You don't know if I like my stuff dimed or not, do you? If you wanted to answer the question, you could have done so without commentary.

Man, if I were actually just starting out, or really new here, a response like yours might turn me off this place.

I don't think you would ever blow the BEs with a Shuttle. They can take way more wattage than it says on paper, and the Shuttle is a pretty conservative 600 watts IMO.

They do sound fairly full-range for cabs with no tweeter; however, get the XD version and they will be full-range. They do roll off the lows fairly early, but with two cabs, it's very hard to tell. I got myself an S-15XD/S-15LD stack that fixes both of those issues. ;)

If you are wanting to cut through- prepare to hear yourself more than you ever have before. These are the only cabs that satisfy my cutting-through demands anymore.

Don't be afraid of the 2-15" stack label either. As Ken Jung has so elegantly put it before, they're more like "super 12s".

And that is how you answer a set of questions. Thank you very much. Seriously. Between this and MichaelVee, it's like Goofus and Gallant. :D

Chill out man, no need to get so bent.

I also have owned a s15d/s15xd stack, along with my current Bag End PA system and found that they can handle much more power then their stats would indicate. They do sound full range and cut through in pleasing way for 15s.

Great equipment IMO.

I would guess when someone refers to their question as "noob" they probably shouldn't be offended when someone responds to that.

If you use some bass boost, a Shuttle 6.0 could blow a pair of those Bag 15's - no problem. I have no doubt that my GK would. I wouldn't describe these as fragile or delicate but they certainly favor efficientcy over power handling - not a bad thing in my book - You do have to pay attention with S15-D's. IMO -the margin between blow and not blow on S15s is pretty thin - not unlike running a rig based on say JBL D140's ... That is totally unlike a rig based on D10X-D's. A single D10X cab of the deep variety handled what my GK 1001 RB II would deliver and good lord was that thing loud for a 2x10 ... I do want another of those ... in birch.

JB, as for my being 'patronizing', I doubt that. You asked several questions, and I answered them based on my experience. So what did you want?

People on Talkbass will be very helpful and talk about things but you can't go around reading attitudes into peoples' replies.

If you don't like my answers, Talkbass is a big place and there are many other threads discussing Bag End cabs. Go post in another one if you don't like this one. Do some searching on Talkbass. Just about everything you asked about has already been discussed hundreds of times.

Or maybe you don't like my avatar. Beware, you don't want to piss off the Turklops!

Well, sold off one of my S15D's. Replaced the 15 in the remaining cab with a co-ax - damn but they don't exactly give away those 15's ... I had a spare x-over. So far I haven't mounted the x-over it's sitting on top of the cab with the wires hanging out the back. Maybe this weekend for the mount. It sounds great for bass but it really shines on my Larrivee Acoustic. Sweet! I haven't tried singing through it yet but I expect that it will work pretty well.

That home brew box above makes some sense. I think I'll knock out a cab for the 15 I pulled. Maybe I can add a little Volume by way of height to maitain the stackability. So how much bigger is the 'L' cab ? Does the size of the port change ?

Sombody on the Portland CL has been hawking what looks to be an L cab for $280 which is probably a far better bet than home brew but hey I haven't cut off a body part lately :D

+1. Although at lower volumes, either adding the bass contour or several clicks of boost on the bass EQ sounds great if you need more depth.

When running the Shuttle into the S15's at higher volumes, it's better to keep the bass EQ flat and contour out, and cut some of those potent low mids. This will make the bass seem louder as if boosted.

The main thing to remember is the Shuttle has big headroom. If you run one really hot, you would run the risk of blowing the drivers. But, of course, this is true of many cabinets, not just the S15's. Again, though, if you don't do anything crazy with bass boost, you can run a ton of power into them.

I'm interested! Have you blown your S15Ds in the past? I've run them full boar with a Epifani UL502, Glockenklang HR, AI Focus and never had any issues. I also run a pair of S18D with a Crown XTI4000 many times at full volume without issue. In all fairness I've blown out my TA2000s twice in the past five or six years but the PA gets some massive use on a regular basis so I am not shocked.

What's your experience?

nope. I'm kinda old school. If my rig sounds like it's in pain, then I turn down. I don't run a lot of bass boost, I cut mid's to get back to the 'round' tonal center or mild scoop I prefer. The stack I purchased used came with a replacement driver in one cab... so it's clearly been done though.

I spent a lot of time playing through JBL based cab's. Some were JBL branded (Cabaret's and 'scoop bins - talk about old school, eh?) and I developed relationships with a number of reconers ... S15's remind me of those in a way. Very, very sensitive which is very good - it does mean that the margin at the top end of the power handling is tight though ... Some cabs seem to be OK with turning excess power into heat and surviving, some don't - my gut tells me that the S15s fall into the don't category. I intend not to find out... those 15's aren't cheap...

Which is not to say that I don't like the S15 cab - it say's that I'm going to be paying a little more attention to them if I'm running them full bore ...

I don't think I agree with your gut but I appreciate your opinion and have no reason to dispute it.

I think we can all agree that running the pair with a GB 6.0 would be no problem assuming responsible use, no massive bass boost, sending clipped signals etc.

Definitely agree, Peter. And that's generally good advice no matter what the cab.

Know your equipment, what its limits are, and find the best sound at the right volume inside that range.

The S15's are sweet cabs.

The L cab is about 5" wider and 3" deeper or so. It's not a huge difference, and it actually weighs a little less than my XD. The port is the same size and in the same spot. The beauty of that cab though is that it doesn't roll off lows until 40Hz.

If someone was selling one in my area for $280, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I paid near $500 for mine new!

I should probably point out that while I suspect it's quite possible to smoke these cab's - you'd have to be 1. deaf and 2. knuckle head to do so ...

hmmm, that L cab design sounds interesting , particularly as I have a suitable driver sitting here un-used. 5" taller and 3 deeper I could probably deal with ... certainly an easy enough box to build.
