well for about 150$ you can get a cheap tascam multi track recorder. Thats what we end up using for most of our recording needs. We usualy just place a mic about 10 feet away from us with a windscreen on it and it picks all of us up pretty well. And the best part you get to keep the recorder and continue to use it later.
 
I think a DVD of a good live performance is a better use of you $ .Our promo DVD is made up of about 8 songs in short segments it runs less that 5 min. This way prospective clients get to see and hear exactly what they are paying for. If you don't do the DVD route sure make a demo, why not ?
