Maybe I'm missing the point but I thought the OP was talking about band names that are pointlessly stupid. Punk bands with offensive names or gross name are doing it to offend and to target their audience. If you go see Gay Bikers on Acid you are kind of clued into what is going to happen.
Car Seat Head Rest?? At what point did that seem clever. The Spoons? Seriously guys put some work into it.
I remember way back, trying to explain to my friends that Rancid was a really good band. One of my current favorite performer is Sea Sick Steve. Again, I have to explain, despite the stage name he is really good!

generally, i dislike pretentious band names. like they're the second coming of jesus, actually that could be a band name.
our band name is UNEMPLOID. it's "edgy". it also can be seen as that we are bums. we're not important.

Just listened to Car Seat Headrest. Not impressed with the name.. but I like what they are doing. They will be better when the guys voice matures a bit. I've always had forbidden love of the minimalist kind of pop rock. Back to Joy Division, Mazzy Star and now The XX, London Grammar and a host of others. The London Grammar and Invalid Link Removed both on Live on KEXP are hypnotic and mesmerizing.

Chumbawumba comes to mind too. Does that mean something I'm not aware of? Sometimes I don't find out for years what really prompted a song title or band name ... like a Foo Fighter. Still sounds like a silly band name, but I realize that's why they make chocolate, vanilla, and a zillion other flavors
just about every metal group with a name trying to sound like the members are tough guys. Those crack me up.
