It took four rehearsals before my bandmates realised that I was playing a bass "without any dots" on it. They were surprised when I told them that someone had stolen the frets too....

Bandmates and your basses

I have a bass awaiting a new finish, but it is the only one with the electronics I need for a few new songs. (It’s got an onboard Boss SYB-5 pedal under the pickguard) When I pulled it out for practice, I start with an “I’m sorry it looks like it got run over by a train. The new paint will be on it before the shows where we will debut these songs”
The BL actually went on about how he liked the looks(and the visible battery velcro’d on) and thinks a steampunk/post apocalyptic theme might be really cool for us as a band.
What have I done... I planned on painting this in purple metallic sparkle...

To demanding bandmates: "I can't hear you la-la-la-la-la"
Seriously - they never mention what bass I play and all my basses are badass also. 
I'm in the process of trying to determine which Epi T-bird variation to invest in (leaning towards a Classic Pro... calling @TBird1958 
), since our drummer and another mate have used the adjectives 'very dark' & 'too aggressive' to describe my one and only gig worthy active Spector shaped bird (seen in my avatar.) I'll agree that it is a bit Hi-Fi on the D & G strings.
Sticks dude is all about the Fenders (I've never heard of them
) and Ampegs with tubes, although he did change that tune somewhat one day when I came in and plopped a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.2 on top of the V4b and plugged in. After looking like he just smelled a fart, he had to concede that it fits our sound really well, and is more than worth its weight in tones

Frankly - I don't think they really care.. The guitar player probably notices when I bring the fretless, but that's about it.

Pretty much the case for me too.Nope. Quite the opposite. They always tell me that no matter what bass or rig I bring, I always sound like me. Sometimes it takes a little fun out of new gear day.
Effph them. I bring what I want.
If I owned a Sousaphone I'd bring it.
I play in churches, and bringing a pedalboard, which is unusual, I sometimes get comments on how much better the pedalboard makes me sound. 90 percent of the time, none of the pedals are on, except the DI. I just smile and say thanks.
About the only comments I've gotten are on the occasional wrong notes.
Occasional comments on the paint work on my Musicmasters, probably 90% positive. Negative comments I credit to people taking themselves to seriously.
As has been said, any differences in sound are designed for my own amusement.

Send me a PM, my band isn't playing again until two shows on New Year's weekend - we're taking a break from rehearsal too, so I have some free time during the week and the occasional weekend evening as well.
My bass of preference is my MusicMan, which I love to play for feel, sound and the look of it. However, our guitarist prefers my MIM J bass as it has more bassy tones (or at least I play it with those tonal settings) than the MM. I do like its tone, but it really gets heavy after a while.
Heh. I remember many years ago I played a Fender Jazz exclusively. Then I went through a period of experimentation with boutique instruments, and ended up with a Fodera 36-inch scale 6-string. My bandmates (in the band I played the most with at the time) called it "the bowling alley".
