Dude, my best mate's dad was Mel Galley, the guitarist! He ended up playing in Whitesnake for a while. He had a comeback tour with a new band planned a few years ago after years out of the industry, but sadly he succumbed to a brain tumor.
Wow.... Sorry to hear about Mel. He was a very good guitarist.
I do remember him in Whitesnake briefly.
The albums he did with Trapeze were exellent, a nice wide variety of song stylings on them.
They were a very good trio.

I stumbled upon them at a show in Chicago in 2004. Every so often I check their website hoping that they will schedule another tour...no dice.
On a random side note, I think the guitar player is the father of M.I.A.'s baby.

Hum - still see the odd reunion show pop up around Chicago ... never hear about them early enough to make it out.
as for some of the others i saw posted - the smiths? they were done before Strangeways was even released.
Jane's addiction? too much to keep in one band. they were IT when they were happening, keep the fond memories.
sublime - he DIED. band did the right thing by walking away.
stevie ray vaughn? SERIOUSLY? *facepalm*
there is a difference between death and "breaking up the band" ...
in my opinion, bands that should have give it up earlier:
smashing pumpkins. should have hung it up after Siamese Dream.
nirvana. should have never made MTV. ruined music and mustang resale prices forever.

Toy Matinee. I wouldn't say "broke up" insofar as the leader, Kevin Gilbert killed himself (or so it is commonly understood/believed), but it is a CRYIN shame his band Toy Matinee did not and/or could not continue.
+1 to that. While Patrick Leonard solidered on w/ Richard Page's help with Third Matinee, and it was good, it wasn't even close to Toy Matinee.
A local Arkansas band, Punkinhead. They were a great soul/funk/R&B band, 100% originals. Luckily I snagged two of their CDs before they went away.
Big +1 to that.
Also +1 to Bleach. Sadness. I heard they're getting back together, or at least playing some shows though.
I was super bummed when Fine China called it quits, but then Withem started The Foxglove Hunt, and I felt better about it.
Yeah, they were pretty darned awesome, everyone ought to give them a listen, his son is an amazing drummer too. A sad loss.

they got together last november for a weekend, and i swear the friday night show was like going back to high school and seeing them. amazing.
friends that made it out Saturday said Kevin blew out his voice Friday and wasn't quite up to par. someone filmed it with a DV cam, but i am yet to see it surface anywhere.

Super late reply(this thread grew like crazy since yesterday) but five point 0 broke up over contractual issues and money, I know them cuz they come from my hometown, were getting pretty big and just ended it all of a sudden, right after getting on road runner and getting a song on the the resident evil soundtrack. Some of the founding members started a new Band called Zillion a lil while back, and the other members have been in a band called Burning Down(or dawn, cant remember which) since they broke up pretty much.
It's always sad to read about Ian Curtis' death.
I would add The Jam 1977-1982. Although, I really think Weller's decision pretty much immortalized the group.

What's with the endless listing of bands where people croaked? Seems kind of silly to call a death a break up.
