Bands that broke up too early?

Have to disagree with Isis; I'm a huge fan, but they felt they'd gone as far as they could and broke it up rather than spoil the legacy of the band. They left a whole load of excellent albums and pretty much perfected the post-metal genre. I think the end of the band was timely and dignified. better that than turn into a parody of their former selves.

+1. I feel the same way about Kyuss.

I still haven't seen any examples of bands that really seem to have broken up too early--that is, left something on the table in regards to creativity or innovation.

Kyuss for sure. Sleep... Yeah, but the Matt Pike wouldn't have formed HoF. I love Snakes for the Devine. Album of the year for me so far. Then again, I love non-cookie monster metal. :bassist:

Desaparecidos. One awesome album & then back to Bright Eyes for Conor Oberst. :(

+1 for GNR (original lineup)

I'd add Jane's Addiction to the list- one of my favs, wish there was more than 2.5 albums.

I'll also add a band called the Pleasure Club to the mix- great rock band with a truly great sound from New Orleans that just never got going for some reason. They had two great records, should have made it. Their singer James Hall has one of the best rock voices ever.

There was a punk band from NY in the mid 90s, female trio called the Wives. 2 cds, 2 different singers/guitarists which greatly affected the style. Both names Sue. I loved both. Unfortunately they broke up. I know years ago the drummer was playing bass in Nashville P**sy but what have become of them I don't know. Would love to learn more but thery are so small I can't find anything on the internet.

Sparta and Mars Volta were cool spin-offs of ATDI, but not as cool as the chemistry they all had together imo. Refused - well, wow, they could have been incredible. Handsome was comprised of some guys from Helmet and Quicksand. Anyway, good stuff TB nation.

the Pixies are back together. I also seriously miss DFA79. one of my favorite bands ever. unbelievable sound they got out of just the rhythm section. ATDI was made of "win", as well.

Primus, Mr. Big, and Van Halen (with DLR) are all getting back together to record and supposedly releasing a new record in 2011...so, I guess an honorable mention goes out to those guys.

I absolutely loved oysterhead, a step beyond Les's other non-primus work.
