So, I strung up a bass with piccolo strings and played along...

Here is a band playing a concert with 3 bassists:



They take turn soloing but all play for other parts as well. There's also 3 drummers on full drum sets + a percussionist and 3 guitarists, and a huge horn section. It's musical perfection.

Sadly there's no video for the Tokyo show, so I am not 100% sure who is playing from each band. Pretty sure both bassists play though.

I saw Ornette about 10 years ago and his band was just him, two double bassists and a drummer. It was insanely good.

Then there was Ornette Coleman's double quartet with both Charlie Haden and Scott LaFaro, most famously heard on the Free Jazz album.

Where I work, we have a lot of musicians. Every December, we have a Christmas show - all internal talent - ad hoc bands formed just to play that show, mostly. A few years ago we got a bunch of bass players and one drummer (we tried it without, it was better with a drummer). We had to work out parts for it to work, but it did. The number? 8 - yes, we had 8 bass players. The thing about it is...most bass players are really good team players - we'll do whatever it takes to make something work. No guitarists, no keyboard players - it was the best 9 piece band I've ever played in in terms of attitudes.

In 2014 Bob Weir's RatDog had both Robin Sylvester and Rob Wasserman playing dual bass on gigs, but Wassermann was on upright and Sylvester was on P bass...hope this is not a repeat...
