Manu Dibangu, a Cameroonian musician and bandleader, used two bass players in his band. He had a 1972 hit on the US charts, "Soul Makossa." I heard an interview with him on the radio in which he stated (imagine rich deep voice with African accent) "one bass player does not give me enough BOTTOM."

Here in the Bay Area, back when the “hip bop” thing was happening, there was a two bass band called Jungle Biskit. Miles Perkins on upright bass. Troy Lampkins on 6-string electric bass. Miles held down most of the low end while Troy played his bass like Hendrix. They were darn good. Kind of a hip-hop thing if I’m remembering right. An MC, sax, the two basses and drums.

I was in an experimental jam band and we had two bassists. I covered the bottom with fat sustain and chords. The other played up the neck more lead like..it was killer.

Years ago I went to a concert in Pollock Pine, CA to see Brian Bromberg. He carried a second bass player. Great concert!

There was NYC post-rockers Ui in the mid-late 90's, featuring future New Yorker staff writer Sasha Frere-Jones. They were great live as a 2 bass + drums trio.



Dianogah was doing something similar in Chicago around the same time. And don't forget the mighty Tortoise, which started as 2 bass players + 3 drummers.

Not all. Totally sucks in traditional Country/Gospel/Bluegrass etc. I was thrust into it once many years ago and all it created was mud. Never again.

I remember a band from my NYC days called Hugo Largo that had two bassists and, if I remember correctly, a viola or violin but no guitarist.
Detroit favorites The Dirtbombs used to play live with a bass player and a "fuzz" bass player; can't remember if the fuzz bass was a baritone guitar/Bass VI or just another bass through a fuzz box.
And it's not a band, but it's notable that Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" features Herbie Flowers playing both an upright bass and a stack-knob Fender Jazz.

Frank Zappa has, on occasion, performed with a "double quartet" that included 2 bassists (ex. Frank Zappa-Halloween '78 audio DVD).

Spade Cooley often used two bass players back in the forties and fifties with his western swing band.
