The thing I appreciate about him is that he's consistent. Its not like he just turned on his attitude one day...atleast he's been that way since his rookie year.
With Manny...you know what your getting. And I still say he plays the wall just as good as Yaz...surprisingly enough, he takes left field very seriously.
Which is exactly Pierce's point - a big part of the reason that Manny (and to a lesser extent, this Sox team) have been successful is precisely the attitude that you and many fans don't like. The thing that I noticed around here is that the fan base is way ahead of the sports pundits in making our peace with the good Manny and bad Manny.
Very true on both counts - although the wall is a little easier to play now than in Yaz's day. There used to be 3 different surfaces on the wall which gave very different bounces depending on height - concrete (very solid), tin scoreboard (hollow) and tin-covered wall (solid). Now the wall itself is encased in something more akin to formica which gives it a closer bounce to the hollow of the scoreboard and no straight concrete. That said, Manny is plays a very solid Fenway left-field. He doesn't have Yaz' arm but he has a very quick release and generally throws accurately.
And they didn't have him for the 80+ years before the world series win either....
I agree that I'm not a fan of his attitude either, and I cringe when I see him stand at home plate honoring himself when he hits a homerun. That isn't good sportsmanship.
But, I too am at peace with it as long as he continuously puts up big numbers, which for the most part he has.
Is Denver becoming a baseball town after years of dominance by the Broncos? What is the mood of the area? Any and all insight appreciated here.
i absolutely love manny. i think the team sort of ina way is carried by hsi attitude as well....it always seems to me that among the winningest teams in baseball, the sox seem to have the most fun as a team, and appear to have a sort of chemistry as a franchise and organization that is often time slacking in baseball cough cough:::yankees:::cough cough.
i love the fact that manny is a little kid in an extremely talented grown man's body, who happens to be arguably one of the best right handed hitters of all time(frank thomas said so this year).

I think Manny looks like a punk with his hair. I think one thing about the Red Sox is they look like dishevelled miscreants with their various wierd facial hair and long hair (Damon back in the day). If I ran an MLB team it would have the Buddy Rich "no beards no long hair" rules like Steinbrenner imposes on the Yankees.

i would agree that ted williams was better, thats why i said "one of".
i personally like the freedom given to the sox players, and i think it contributes to their team chemistry and the idea of having fun and being yourself in addition to playing the sport. a lot fo the players have commented on that in the last few years. i dont think most organizatiosn would allow manny to be manny like the sox do, which is one reason why i love the team. to each his own.

I was wondering if anybody'd get my picture...
Well I am not a huge sports fan and even less of a fan of baseball so my insight is limited. My impression is that turnout for the Rockies is somewhat directly proportional to how they perform. Seems like they just suddenly started playing really well. People are going crazy over the tickets especially after it all went fubar yesterday. I dont forsee Denver being a baseball town moreso than a football town though even with a World Series win.

the only two players in the game right now that might be better(minus the playoffs) are vlad and arod. manny in the playoffs is equalled only by the man that abts in front of him ona daily basis. go sox!!

Cool, I wouldn't think things would change that much that quickly; but I could see baseball getting a bigger share of the psychic sports pie so to speak. Sort of the reverse of what has happened here with the Patriots. I would still say that the Sox are #1; but the Pats went from 4 to 3 to 2 to 1-B over the past five-ten years.

I see it going 7 and I'll be rooting for my Sox; but unlike '04 which really did have a feel of destiny that the Cards were going to go down; my feeling (and I think it is shared by my local Sox fans) is that this one is a pick-em. The Sox won the most games to date and were tested by the Yanks all year long and a tough Cleveland team in the last series. But the Rockies have been playing great since the All-Star game and are absolutely off-the-charts since mid-September.
