I liked the Red Sox a whole lot better when they weren't winning. My friends that are Sox fans are approaching Yankee-fan like cockiness.

New England already has the Pats. :p

Gotta root for the underdog in the Series, lets go Rockies!

Yes, this is a genuine problem. As a third generation red sox fan that now lives in NY, I see fair weather red sox fans every day. It's getting harder and harder to tell the real fans from the, well, "new" fans. I was at a party this past weekend and somebody there summed it up perfectly. My brother-in-law introduced me to a friend of his, and told him I was a "big Red Sox fan". He simply responded, "isn't everbody these days?". I was a little disgusted by that remark, but I smiled, said "nice to meet you", and walked away.

I was reading the Fox Sports blogs (boards?) about the ALCS and upcoming World Series. There are a lot of nasty people posting. Some said they were Red Sox "fans" others were supposedly Rockies "fans". There were many posters who claimed to fans of other teams. While there were some cordial and congratulatory posts, most were simply trash/garbage mouth posts. I think many of them may have been made by the Fare-weather fans that you described. Sad. :rollno:

I’ve been a Red Sox fan since I was eight years old. (Damn! Has it been 41 years already?:eyebrow::D)

I would say I'm a regular fan, I watch the games, remained a Sox fan through all the lean years etc. no matter their record, and I have been accused by someone 15 yrs. younger than me of buying a Sox cap after they won the WS. I had the hat since age 15. I have the same giant head I've always had. Granted I can't rattle off stats like some folks but that sort of pissed me off.

All that said, I can't wait for the series to start, even though I am tired at work for the whole thing. :)

Oh, I hear ya. I remember after the Sox won the 2004 ALCS, and I wore my 10 year old Sox jersey to work the next day. One of the yankee fans asked me "what did you do, go shopping at Dicks Sporting Goods this morning?" It is the winning team fan stigma. If you like the team that is winning, you must be a front runner fan. It doesn't matter that I wore that Jerzy probably every "dress down" friday for the last two or three years before the 2004 season at my current job.

Mess like this annoys the flip out of me as well. Even worse for myself...first and foremost I'm a fan of baseball. Second. I'm a Braves fan. I started watching baseball in '89 when they absolutely SUCKED. I'm sure you remember...:scowl:
Third, because I'm a Braves fan, I'm a New York hater. And while I've cheered for the Red Sox and followed baseball since I was in kindergarten('89), I've always cheered against the Yankees and Mets. And being a Braves fan, I def. reserve that right. Since I'm a New York hater, I've always cheered for the Sox...seems logical.

Oddly enough...I've only been to 2 Major League games/stadiums in my life. The first was Fulton County Stadium in '93 against the Phillies and the second was in '05 at Fenway against the Yanks. Both were great games...home team won both as well. Good times. But yes, I feel for you...I've been accused of being a 'fair weather fan' for both the Braves and Red Sox. And while my love is for the Braves I very much love the city of Boston and all the people I met there were great. I wish them the best.

I hate saying this but seeing Trot get some hits in the series did make me smile quite a bit...he's from my area, great guy...

And for the record New Yorkers...Catfish Hunter was a Braves fan ;)

Yeah, now you can count me as a subdued fan. I love the Red Sox and always will, but even today, I feel a bit of shame as I'm not wearing my sox jersey to work in celebration. I'm tired of being grouped with "fair weather fans", so I'll celebrate internally instead of externally. :D

It's amazing that even being a fan is a competition...but it's really just even more casual fans trying to make you feel bad or bruised ego anti-fans.

Really tho, it's tame compared to soccer fans in other countries.

That said...GO SOX GO SOX GO SOX GO SOX GO SOX!

I've loved baseball since I was itty bitty. Ain't no one takin that from me. Sure, I had my stints with Star Wars, ongoing with rock and roll and females, but I've always loved baseball. :smug:

I had the fortune of getting to go to a World Series game in Toronto in each year they won. I still watch Jays games a lot (probably 70 a year.. I consider that a lot :P), but my real heart went to the Red Sox around 98 or so when I became infatuated with using them in games because of Pedro and Nomar.. then that turned into Millar and Nixon.. and then that turned into Manny/Ortiz... I may be one of those 'newer' Red Sox fans, but I've been wearing my sox hat and shirts since around 99 to the point that I regularly get threatened at Jays games now...

This is going to be one hell of a World Series (i hope), and has the potential to be the best one since 2002 or 2003.. hopefully with no upset result as the final though.

Rox and Sox - should be a great series. Cleveland has a great team and should be a playoff contender for a while if they hold this team together.


The Rockies took two out of three from the Sox this year at Fenway.

Wake beat Cook 2-1 with an 8 inning 4-hitter
Fogg beat Schilling 12-2 - game was close for 4 innings then Colorado blew it open in the 5th and 6th.
Francis beat Beckett 7-1 - the Sox left 14 men on base.
