Baseball season 2007

Ok, I've been in a foul mood for the past few weeks, and today I realized what it was. The Saints' season was over, I'm not much of a basketball fan, and baseball wasn't in swing yet (pardon the pun). This Sunday we'll see the season open up. What are your hopes/prayers/thoughts on the upcoming season. Will Daisuke Matsuzaka be worth it? Will Stienbrenner's check book fail him again (we can only hope!)? Will LaRusa go on a bender and screw the Cards' season?

Personally I'm just hoping the Braves can get over .500, and maybe make a run for the wild card. Probably won't happen, but I can hope.

Closer to home, our AA team kicks off the season on Thursday. I'm excited as this is our first year with a new parent program. For 10 years our Baybears were the Padres' AA affiliate, but there were some big shake-ups in the Southern League. The contracts were up for 9 of the 10 teams with thier parent club, so we were hoping to land the Cubs here. That didn't pan out, and we landed the Diamondbacks. I'm anxious to see if this new squad can get Mobile back into the Southern League championship.

It's Spring. We're just about to kick March under the rug and smell sweet April. Here in Cincinnati hope springs eternal as we turn our lonely eyes to the Reds. Anything can happen... Jerry says the pitching is better (and on paper he's right!). Griffey is healthy and the hope is that Dunn will have twice as many AB's as he has strikeouts.

Yes..... the world is wonderful and our hearts are high. Life is Good! Perhaps something wonderful will happen with the Reds... I've seen things like that in the movies.

I dunno, I think Dice-K might live up to the hype with his gyro ball (I pronounce it "hero ball" for kicks). I never knew that there was a way to actually grip and throw the gyro ball...for me, that's how a baseball normally comes out of my hand.

I was stoked about the Pirates' team last season, but after a sorry first half, they were pretty much eliminated by the All-Star break. Hopefully they can carry over momentum from the last half of last season. Their pitching has to be consistent...and not consistently bad, that is.

Realistically I'm excited for baseball to start too.. I always have 2 sports in my life (Football > Hockey > Baseball > Basketball).. When Football and Hockey are on, basketball gets neglected.. when baseball and hockey are on, basketball gets neglected... and when only baseball is on... it's lonely.

Another year, another possibility for a monumental Cub disappointment. Sigh. As any faithful Cubbie fan would, I too have high hopes...but that bitter ending the last time we came close still makes me wish for a sub-par season in some sick way.

The Jays are having some big injuries early on, most notably Reed Johnson, Troy Glaus (although he's back), Greg Zaun, and BJ Ryan. The absence of Ryan is really showing the Blue Jays are weak in the relief department. Personally, I was upset when they lost Justin Speier to free agency. Rookie Adam Lind has been doing a pretty good job in taking Johnson's playing time, and of course Roy Halladay is pitching in dominant form. I just hope Halladay gets to complete the season.

I like how the Red Sox are going.

Dice-K was an expensive signing and only time will tell if it was a good value. If you pro-rate the posting fee; the Sox are paying over $14,000,000 for his services which would put him in the top 2 or 3 pitchers in the league. He is not worth that much; but I predict that he will pitch about as well as the guys making $10,000,000 and I am hoping that in the later years of his contract, his pay will look like a bargain.

1. The Yankees seemed to bidding against themselves and appear to have overpaid. I guess I'd rather have the money in Roger's pocket than George's - tough call, though.

2. The Yankees seemed to be embracing their "inner Hollywood" with the dramatic in-game announcement of the signing. Didn't strike me as a particularly Yankee-like thing to do. I thought that the Red Sox with Tom Werner, a real-life Hollywood producer as part-owner, had this market cornered, but I was wrong.

3. The Yankees made Johnny Damon get a haircut; but Roger gets to set his own schedule, travel when he likes, etc. I actually think it is great that Roger was able to negotiate these perks, but was a little surprised that the Yankees gave them to him.

when it comes down to it statistically last year Clemens was pretty much the best pitcher in the league. I'm sure if he could have single handedly boosted Houston's ERA he would have, i think i heard if Houston had the Yankee's offense he would have won almost all of his games.
