The 'mid cut' thing with slap style gets many players in trouble (the dreaded 'boom and click' slap sound that can give 'slap and pop' playing a bad name in the bass community).
To the OP, the best 'slap setting' is to spend a lot of time in the woodshed. There is absolutely no reason to touch a knob when going from fingerstyle to slap style playing. Most who cut mids do so to IMO cover up technique issued.
In SOME situations (depending on the inherent voicing of the cab, amp and/or bass), a slight cut in the 'gank' area (around 1K... the upper mids) can help smooth out the initial slap transient a bit.
The key to developing a usable slap technique is to be able to go seamlessly from fingerstyle to slap with no volume difference, and no tonal difference other than the initial slap transient. I found the best way to get there is to practice everything you play fingerstyle (scales, simple lines, etc.) using a thumb hit. When they both sound the same (same volume, same low end, etc., you are there!
Thank you, made sense.
I practice alot on my acoustic bass, In my own time i play Funk reggae, but the 3 bands im in are. Thrash, Bright metal and Hardcore Chugy chug chug project. So when i do get the chance to play my electric Rig [stays In my familys studio rehersal room] I find myself trying to change my tone all the time, i just cant find a good volume to slap and not fart out or crack in a loud 3 peice setting. I don't slap in the bands only when im jamming with another guitarist or drummer. Im saving my biscuits for some kind of Midi Foot controller because i think i need a wah & couple pedals for projects.
What Pedal Or midi controller is good for enhancing funk slap sound, you know that Sexy bup bup bangda dang da.
