Bass Big Muff volume mod

Late update:

This was the cause indeed:
Sounds like a bad/intermittent joint somewhere. Check continuity with a meter/resolder. Visual inspection sometimes misses them.

Even though the joints were all looking and feeling solid, moving around the wires while playing through the pedal quickly showed one to be intermittent. I resoldered and all is good again!

So, many thanks!

This looks amazing, 4stringphuzz!

Anyone know where I can purchase the parts for a mod like this?

Just did this mod, works great and I love it! I thought about doing it slightly differently, so that the new volume pot would adjust the amount of clean signal when in Dry mode, rather than acting as a master volume after the blending function - which as it's been stated always uses 100% of the dry signal, but in practical use it doesn't seem to be necessary to do that. If you jack up that in-built Volume knob so that the distorted sound is full up along with the dry sound, you can't really hear the dry sound much at all, and the subtlety you might get from wiring the new pot to adjust only the dry signal would be totally lost in a band setting.

thinking about doing both these mods next week and I'm wondering if anyone else has thrown in a pot for controlling the oscillation. Wondering if I should go with 500k or a 1Meg pot. I used some alligator clips and tried a 250k and a 25k (all I had around) and neither functioned very well. They end up working like clumsy on off switches instead of a variable range.

Thanks everyone who chipped in on this thread. The volume issue has always seemed like a glaring omission from EH and I've already got a 100k mini pot on the way to take care of it!

OK parts on the way.

I'm 99% sure I got this, but before I go nuts with the snipers for the volume mod, I'm going to ask the stupid questions. :o

Stop me when I'm wrong...
-The grey ribbon cable has 6 wires.
-The last one on the output side of the box gets cut in two, peeled off and stripped.
-Wire up with heat shrink per post #37 http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/bass-big-muff-volume-mod-713891/index2.html#post10130877
-Rock

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help my "unadventurist" self :D

Sounds good to me astack. I'd recommend hooking it up with alligator clips to test before you do the final wiring. That way you're sure before the soldering iron comes out.

So I ended up ordering both a 500k and a 1Meg mini pot to A/B before the install. I'll update on which one I go with in a week or so when parts are here.

Alright, got parts in today and got the volume mod taken care of without issue. Tried putting a 1 meg volume pot in with the feedback loop but no luck. I get no feedback from 0-90% of the volume sweep then the effect comes in the last 10%. There is a slight range in the feedback from 90-100% but not enough to install a pot instead of switch. Anyone have any ideas on getting some more range or should I give up and just put in a switch?

Try experimenting not only with values but tapers as well. e.g. if your current pot's are linear, try some log.

I have gotten pretty good at not involving myself in the many mind numbing/ridiculous threads on TB, but I keep coming around because quite often you find something like this thread, (i.e. a great idea that benefits me that I wouldn't likely come up with on my own.)

I have always liked my BBM, I just never used the blend mode, for reason mentioned here. I've done the volume mod, and now I like it even more. So thank you OP, and contributors to this thread. I really appreciate it.

Also, I found the sound sample links in post 36, and decided not to do the oscillation mod. My current soldering iron gets a little too hot, and I'm afeared that I melt something crucial.

Peace, JBY
