Bass cables different than guitar cables?

I would have been that guy, but my the manual that came with my first hi-fi speakers (Advent) specifically said to use 18-gauge lamp cord.

Just throwing it out there but a couple brands I’ve been happy with that aren’t ridiculously expensive-

Pig Hog Instrument cables. Come in a variety of cool colors or their pro grade in black. I’m currently using both with no issues .

Sewell Electric Silverback cables. - Bought one of these to mono bridge the output of my Eden WT 500. 24K gold plated banana plug ends and 257 strand oxygen free copper wire , 12 gauge AWG. Sounds expensive. But not. $15 for a 3’ cable.

It may be something about companies using the name Monster. Monster Cable and Monster Energy Drinks are both known for their over the top trademark “defense.” Monster Energy Drink even sued Disney over the movie Monsters Inc.

The only monster cable I owned ended up being too large for my jacks. The cable was too thick to wrap and too heavy.

Who the hell wants to take out the fretting sound? That's called "tonal character." Don't like it? Play fretless. I don't get offended easily by sales pitches, but this one actually offends me.

I remember those cables! Had black anodized barrels on the plugs, didn't they? Our guitarist bought one sometime in the mid-80s. He was so proud of it at the first gig he used it... until the cold-solder joint on one end failed... right in the middle of his duckwalk and solo in "Johnny B. Goode". In all honesty, they were great quality cables. I fixed his after the gig. The jacket was damn near bulletproof.

Mine has brass ends. They may have had some with anodized, I don’t remember.
They are great cables. First I saw or knew of with clear shells... We ordered them at the shop when first out...

We also had the first do it yourself patch cable display too at the shop...a bunch of brass ends in top of the display with a roll of cable under..... Cable by the foot... Slide cable in hole and tighten screw. Done.... Dicks up, loosen screw, pull, clip a half inch, stick back in, tighten screw. Done... Good cables for stomps or 1/4” patch cables...
Have a couple of those still in my old road trunk....

Lamp cords work just as well as speaker cables as anything. I've made several speaker cables out of lamp cord and they're just fine.

Lamp cords work just as well as speaker cables as anything. I've made several speaker cables out of lamp cord and they're just fine.

I do use 10 gauge instead of lamp cord, only because we have a speaker place here, Jamac, that sells it a few cents a foot. But yeah, that and some Neutrik plugs and I'm good to go!

I’ve never had to replace a Monster cable either. BECAUSE I’VE NEVER BOUGHT ONE. And never will. That guy is an idiot.

Never use a guitar cable for bass! The notes are too wide. Never use snare key to tune a tom. Never charge your laptop in a lamp plug. Never use a banjo pick on a mandolin. Never hang a P bass strap on a Jazz. Never take musical equipment advice from a consumer package goods salesperson.
