Bass Compressor, Which One?

...or just purely LAZY, like I am!

That's why I still try to have FOUR different comps on my (soon to finally be built) pedal board! I hate "knob-ing", as my friend says; you know what I mean- having to get down on the floor to adjust stuff in the middle of playing or between tunes. I try to keep that to a minimum.

Another reason to try the simple LA 2A optical type controls plus a clean boost.

In my humble opinion, MXR M87 is a good compressor for beginners because it visually shows you how your signal is affected when you turn knobs. Considering that home volume levels may be misleading the judgement of your ears, it is a nice plus.
The visual reference is also a good tool while A/B different basses, and what I originally purchased it to do. Like you said bedroom level, practice room level, or music store level doesn't let you get far enough away from the amp to hear how much different things really can be.

Hmm…looking at the magic box shelf…

MXR Dynacomp
BOSS CS-2
Keeley Bassist
Keeley Compressor+
Markbass Compressore
Bogner Lyndhurst
Ovinfx Smoothie

…one more currently on order and at least four more on the “to buy” list.

They do seem to sprout up like mushrooms don’t they?

Yup!

Mmmm... Mushrooms... Drool

I've never wanted a comp on my board, until recently.... primarily because my new band will be much quieter & more focused than the many years I spent playing as loud as I wanted with a jamband. New outfit is leaning towards jammy-ish versions of R&B/Motown, so I'm gonna be in the pocket a lot (whereas my old band, anything goes). I always preferred any comp to be added down the line at the console/FOH, because I use lots of effects/dynamics & never enjoyed any squarshing of my vibes...

A few I've been narrowing in on:
I've seen the MXR bass/studio pedals land at #1 on almost all "best bass comp" lists.
I like the simplicity of the Xotic SP, because it is basically 1 knob & has blend.
I've seen tons of rave reviews for the Cali76 stuff, but I don't wanna drop that amount of coin.
Wampler seems to be a nice (step up?) beyond the MXR bass/studio because it also has blending.

Right now my chain is:
Tuner > Micro POG > Emma DiscumBOBulator > MXR BOD > MXR BEF > MXR Uni-Vibe > Tech21 Boost Bass Fuzz (tho, I'm contemplating replacement with a Way Huge Pork & Pickle) > DOD Carcosa > MXR EVH Phase90 > Tech21 VT Bass. (usually starts with either a Lakland Decade or Lakland J, usually ends with a MarkBass LMT800 into a pair of NY121 cabs)

I've been told that the best place I'll most likely to enjoy the compression is after drives, or at the very end of my chain. I know this is the opposite of most players who put it 1st. I'll gladly take some advice/suggestion from any on this topic...

Depends on what you like.
I've own and having a owned Markbass, Diamond, Duncan, and FEA DECL.
For me, the FEA exceeds all my expectations; adjustable compressor with a separate adjustable limiter, both with thrshold indicators. It does it all.
The Duncan will stay as a backup.

I'm interested in trying the new Darkglass just to see what they have built, but the FEA does exactly what I want from a compressor / limiter.
So many good choices.
For many, the budget will help make the choice.

I highly recommend Ovnilab as a resource in this quest, He's a bass player, very knowledgeable and thourough in his reviews.

Got to agree with this post.

You really have to try as many as you can and start your own collection based on what you like, there are a lot of different designs and different takes on the same design.

I personally use a Diamond Pedals special edition compressor for France, the 'Diamond Comp SL'. It is super quiet and clean with a unique Diamond tone-stamped sound. Run at 18v no problems with clipping.

If I were to push the button on another it would be a Cali76 6-knob non bass version...
