Bass Deal Dilemma

I've been trying to get a used amp for around 6 months now, with no avail. Anyway I'm not going to buy one online, because I have no way of doing it. Either Craigs/Kijiji or a Music Store. I live in Kitchener, Ontario, so I can't just walk to GC and get something lol the music stores here are sadly limited. Theres a Marshall That I initially wanted to get - The MB4410 (450 watts with an extension, 300 with the provided 4x10s) but then I saw that they had a head version of it, so I decided to go for a more portable 2x10 ashdown and then get the extension 115 later. But if its better to keep looking for used gear then I should probably do that.

You know, I honestly don't remember. I got the 210T from Musician's Friend double discounted because it was blemished (the expanded metal grille was pushed in a little, but Ashdown sent me a replacement grille free of charge). The 115 I paid about $300 (IIRC) locally. I guess I spent in the neighborhood of $700 total.

I would go with either of the used Yorkvile 410 w/head. I would definitely not go with any 410 combo because of the weight. That MAG 410 combo is 98 lbs. I find that band members are not as willing to help me carry my 96 lb 410 cab as they are to help carry the 60 lb. PA speakers.

I really wish someone would've told me this when I started not too long ago.... I ended up buying an Ampeg B1RE and SVT 410 BOTH NEW!

I wasted (or didn't save, however you spell it) so much money....It wasn't too long before I realized the B1RE head was much too small, but I couldn't afford anything better. I just had to deal with it until if found a good head.
I waited and (thanks to the great folks here at Talkbass) I found out that GC had a sale on GK 1001-rbII heads for $550 (normally $750). so it goes to show,

1- If I had bought everything used, I would've been able to afford better stuff the first time, and
2- Patience is key for deals. Check the TB classifieds, Musiciansfriend.com/stupid , TB's Hot Deals thread, frequently, in addition to what you normally check.

If i had to do it over again, I definitely gotten everything used. MUCH more Bang for you Buck.


As far as the Bass vs Amp issue is concerned, I agree with the rest of these guys. Get what you need now, there will always be cool used basses floating around. Also, basses can be shipped much more easily than a cab, so if you find a local deal on a cab, get it.
