Bass Features: Top Ten Personal Turn-Offs

Top Ten reasons to demean ERBs ;):

1) It's easier to criticize that which you don't understand than it is to learn about it.

2) Fear of change or progress.

3) ERBs appear intimidating to the uninitiated.

4) Insecurity.

5) Envy.

6) Conformity.

7) Too cheap to buy a decent instrument.

8) Old-school fashion slave.

9) Insufficient musical imagination, creativity, or originality.

10) Pro bono cheerleader for the Fender Corporation.

Yeah, but nobody's actually demeaning them. The topic is personal turn offs. Some people, including me are personally turned off by ERBs. That's all there is to it! We just don't like them, nobody is telling you not to play them, so why make posts calling us unimaginative conformists? I don't think the winking smiley excuses comments like this.

You guys covered some good ones... my #1 turn-off however: fretboards without the 24th fret. It's just plain nice to have two full octaves per string. And I always end up using them all! And if your name is Alain Caron, you will need more than 24.

The post was made because while you don't give people **** for playing them, a lot of people do.

Are you guys complaining about batteries serious? I've probably had mine in there for almost a year now and it's fine, I leave my bass plugged in all day at band pracs and gigs etc.

Usually change it every 6 months or so.. It's really not that big of an issue.

As for the topic, not much. If it plays and sounds right, i'll like it.

I've had my bass almost 2 years and changed the batteries once. It was less than $10 for the pair of 9vs.

you forgot point 11:

11) unable to post a name of a bassplayer who actually put a milestone in contemporary music with an ERB device.

Dear Debased, please redo this as an anti-ERB and anti-boutique thread. :p

i would call it: Guitar vs. Bass thread :hiding:

Dear boutique and ERB users.....
I hate your strings, I hate your excessive number of frets/stops, I hate the knobs, I hate the tops, tone woods suck. Most importantly, I hate youz! :hiding:

it's funny how more than 90% of the "turn offs" where about the classic design and no one went offendend and started any discussion about that. and one post of mine saying that ERB's are turning me off put the fire on. i later kindly asked what's about the ERB thing and i got an answer to it and for me that was ok. nobody used the word HATE. seems you guys cannot handle criticism on INSTRUMENTS DESIGNS. you turned it into offending PEOPLE.

let it go and get over it.

peace!

Just because you are unfamiliar with a specific area of music it doesn't mean that there aren't GREAT players within the category ..... just a few examples:

Anthony Jackson
John Pattitucci
Les Claypoole
John Myung
Al Caldwell
Jean Baudin
Jauqo III-X
Trip Wamsley
Yves Carbonne
Dominic DiPiassa

If you don't know who any of these players are, do yourself a favor and give them a listen .....

i know some of them and they are great. but not because they play ERB's...;)

As somebody said, this is an argument of personal preference, and I think people need to keep that in mind. I don't think anybody is trying to sway anybody else, but I do think it's perfectly reasonable for a person to explain their preferences in hope that people on the other side of the fence will understand where they are coming from. I know that's all I am trying to do. Whether or not I succeed, I don't know, but I really wasn't trying to put anyone down. For me, as a Fender fan, this thread has been one of those rare moments on here where I haven't felt terribly alone for my preferences in instruments. There's a lot of love on here for instruments I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, and I think most people are too respectful to say, "man, that's ugly!" And that's good, don't get me wrong, but it also has the effect of making me believe I'm the only bassist in the world that thinks that way. This thread is a good bash fest that should be fun for everyone. I think sometimes people NEED that sort of thing. I certainly don't mind that people have insulted my favorite qualities in an instrument (it happens all the time around here), and I don't think people should mind when the opposite happens.

let it go and get over it.

Agreed :D

You're relatively new here so you haven't been exposed to the endless ERB thumping over the past several years. I can absolutely understand someone disliking extended range basses, just like I can understand those who dislike Fenders or acoustic basses or headless basses or whatever. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and after all, that's exactly what this board is all about .... opinions.

It's when the opinions get personal that feathers get ruffled. To say "I don't like ERB's" is fine, but when the comments subvert to "ERB's are not a bass and the players who use them are wanna-be guitarists" is now an attack. (Not suggesting that any of these words are yours, merely here as an example ;)). Multiply that by hundreds of threads each year with the same theme, and yes, players get upset and defensive.

I personally have NEVER bashed a brand, style or appearance of a bass in a vindictive manner, and on those extremely rare occassions that I've had something less than positive to say about any instrument it has been an opinion based on actual use of the equipment. And I've made it clear that it was my informed opinion only, not a blanket condemnation of the entire brand/style. ERB bashing has gotten so bad that a TB rule was developed to specifcally warn against the bashing

Sticky Rules Posted by John Turner said:
i've about had it with the insults and the snide b.s. about extended range instruments and the musicians who choose to play them. i've dealt with it for over 14 years, and i've dealt with it here from some poor unfortunate ignoramouses ever since i first got here over 7 years ago. most folks ask honest questions about instruments they don't understand or never experienced, and that's fine, any number of the extended range players on the site here will be glad to share their experiences and answer questions.

but the (thankfully small) gaggle of clucking airheads who feel the need to be insulting about someone else's instrument choice need to adjust their cluck. it's disrespectful and flies right in the face of the #1 rule here at talkbass. we want this site to be a comfortable area for all bassists, and these kinds of comments make that impossible.

so the next time you think you have something funny to say about someone's instrument choice at their expense (nevermind the fact that we extended range bassists have heard it _all_ before, from folks smarter than you even, and they still sounded like idiots) think twice. it very well could cost you the priveledge of posting here
Hopefully this will help to explain why the constant picking at the ERB-scab is so often greeted with such a vocal response. Again, to be clear, this isn't directed at you or your posting specifically, but more towards the on-going trend to classify ERB's as something not worthy of the bass classification .....

AREN'T THEY ALL GUITARS? BASS GUITARS?

I don't see them as bass guitars, more as electric basses. They're an entrely different animal. But IN MY OPINION I just think these guitar copies look cheap and kinda stupid, especially the SG bass. They just don't appeal to me. Apart from the Jag. ;)

Every rule needs an exception, right?

this is the best post so far and explains a lot to me. i'll keep in mind this for the future and will try to choose my words more accurately.

thank you!

see,i disagree.i belive the instument we play is a bass guitar.thats why they make acoustic bass guitars and electric bass viola's.the upright bass viola is a different intrument in a different family.yes many play both but i fell we are closer to guitars than violins.my .02

IMO there is a lot of the "HEY!!! LOOK AT ME!!!" syndrome associated with ERB players. It's the "I have a lot of strings so I'm a better bass player" philosophy.
IMO It's also a matter of laziness.
A buddy of mine plays a six string and he explained that it helps to avoid moving up and down the neck. How boring can that be?

...dude its just a message board where people can post "persoal" opinions.don't get your panties in a bunch,
Dude, you're new here. It's more than just a message board for many of us (myself included). A lot of guys here have been here a long time and have formed a relationship with each other. We know a lot about one another. Don't write this place off as just another board full of nameless and faceless dudes. It's not like that here. That's what separates TB from most other forums on the 'net. Stick around long enough, and you'll see that!

Oh yeah? Well, it's a proven fact that 4-string players can't adapt to more capable instruments because of personal limitations, low IQ, and lack of musical talent. So there!
