Bass goals for 2023

I’m not a big New Year resolution guy. But I still believe the New Year is an opportune time to reflect and maybe set some goals.

Practice? Sight reading? Gig more?What are your bass-related goals for the new year?

To not be 'the weak link in the chain', regarding our band. I'm very fortunate to have, what I believe, four other mates who feel the same.

We have more gigs scheduled for '23, three of which are multiples... once you get your foot in they door, the rest follows... unless you have a fake foot, then it's pretty much just a doorstop.

Continue to work on efficiency of motion. More accurately, efficiency on 5 string which I have been lazy about the B string up above 10 or so.

Oil the fretboard. Replace flats with Rotosound 66s.

1. Re: the band - write more, practice more (both on my own and with the guys), and try to push for more songwriting.
2. Re: basses - Don't buy any more! Excepting that it's in service of goal #4
3. As a step to goal #4 - Finish my workshop...space. Really all that's left is some shelving and the actual workbench-type area.
4. Learn more about modding/building, especially routing. Eventual goal is doing mods/builds for a local charity, either as raffle prizes or for the kids who get the basses to have a unique, playable first instrument.

"bass goals" = more gigs! i'd be happier gigging more --- not so much that there's a 'grind' to it, just enough that i'm always looking forward....you know, 'the perfect situation'!

To sell some gear and keep it simple. My practice room looks like a music store.

It’s not that I’ve bought a bunch all at once, took years. I rarely sell anything anymore. Not willing to take a beating from buyers , selling platforms or shipping companies.

2-3 gigs a month , no country music on gigs , buying no gear , getting jazz bass lines down to muscle memory .

As I finally found great lessons by Victor Wooten, my plan is to master double thumbing that I was never able to use before.

And the second one: with the 2nd child on the way I'll try to find time for playing.

During the last couple years, my availability to gig has been terrible due to the excessive hours (7 days a week, plus frequent call) I've been working in the medical field. I just switched jobs to research which leaves nights and weekends open, and once I'm finished moving I hope to get back to steady gigging, but I have to find a new act first.

Not in 2023! Downshifting to 40. And I can hardly wait for our February "Band Break."

For me it’s about gigging more and being content with the gear I have (ie- stop selling/buying guitars)

I also want to get better at my Chet Atkins fingerpicking on acoustic. Not solely a bass goal, but bass-adjacent, since playing melody over the bassline is challenging.

Play less bass and more guitar and/or keys at the weekly jam I play.

And building a bass from scratch would be the obvious next step in my DIY music gear evolution.

I made my wish come true in advance of Jan 1. I'm already in 2 bands (classic rock & on bass ukulele). I pitched the idea of a friend of mine playing guitar and bass to back up a choir which has no musicians supporting them. They've done very well a-capella but we're all excited about this new idea for '23.

I agree with @tb-player about New Year's resolutions, but having bass goals is a great idea! Always good to look back at the year and see what needs improvement from a fresh perspective.

Here are my goals, in no particular order:
1. Get a more streamlined practice routine down, with efficiency in mind. Don't practice the same things every day nor the stuff I already know.
2. Singing back-up harmonies and playing!
3. Learn more about recording on my computer.
4. Work on my own material and record it.
