Bass Magicstomp!!!

I really really didn't like it all the presets are different eq types, and its difficult to edit without a computer

I didn't play with it for long, its seems good as a multi fx but I don't like multis and doubt I will be buying this.

But try one out guys because it certainly didn't sound bad just boring.

i'm curious if it's feesible to get synth tones out of it, i.e. like the deep impact or such pedals...i do'nt much about pedals but can't warrant dropping 300 on just a deep impact that i won't use all that often. whereas this seems to add quite a lot of others and i love yamaha. anyways, yeah, thanks.

The manual on the web for this thing talks about 'Performance Mode'.
For those of you who haven't read it, the normal mode has an on/off button for the patch, and then a + and - button to scroll through to other patches. In Performance mode the three footswitches become on/off buttons for 3 patches (01,02,and03) and then you press and hold the + or - to move onto the next set of 3 (i.e. 04,05and06).

This seems like quite a cool idea, but what it doesn't make clear is can you have 2 or 3 effects active at once in this mode (like having 3 individual stomp boxes) or is it only ever capable of having one 'on' at a time ?

Anyone either got one of these (or had a lot of time in a shop to try one out) and can answer this ??

Cheers

Each patch has one, and only one, effect. Now, the effect itself would be a combo - e.g. distortion and delay. But if I understand it right from my time using it, you're stuck to the preset effect list.

O.K. I ordered one today since nobody seems to have one. I am not an effects guy so the multi route is fine with me. I considered the digitech but it looks too cheesey and i hear sound quality is a little rough. I have had the korg bass pandora but it crapped out through battery corrossion. So I will let you all know. I don't need the expression pedal. I dig the simple styling and that performance mode is exactly what i need for live play. I also dig the fact you can download different effects. I would much rather use a PC taen navigate through Chiclet style buttons with some cryptic logic.

I wonder if you can purge the bad effects that you will never use.

The piecemeal effects route just isn't feasible for me yet. If it ws, I would buy the Moogerfooger and H & K Tube Rotosphere, and each is around $350 street price.

It sucks.

It has been unpredictable for gigs. Most effects sound are blah. Not all, however. Construction is good. The PC downloadable features do not seem to stick in the thing's memory.

The ABG feedback eliminator works. It seeks out offending frequencies and with a stomp on the button, kills it and displays the freq. for 2 nanoseconds. This procedure takes 2 pages in the manual and is not easily remembered, which sucks since the thing does not allow you to store this setting. It must be engineered to think that our ABG changes its Q on a daily basis.

But it has room for lots of guitxxr effects, which is all that the websight has currently.

In short, it sucks.

Edit: I am committing myself to use the software more to tweak this thing. I just am having trouble getting the changes to stick. If I can dial in 4 or 5 usable sounds, then I will retract some of the above things. My manual is MIA and I need to find it.

You see, you can fully edit the patches (endless routing posibilites). Also you can edit them via USB, and load future patches onto it via USB. You can also digitaly share your own patches... Very freaking cool...

Endless routing? That sounds pretty optimistic to me. I'm guessin you cant chain more than 3 in a row and I'd be suprised if you got to choose the order. Then again I've never used a Magicstomp so I don't know. Do you actually use reverb on your bass? I can't really imagine that. Cheers anyways, good luck with it.

Your kidding right :eyebrow: Tecx using reverb on bass? He uses reverb more than you use a tuner (But always in a tasteful fashion), reverb is a very important effect to solo bassists, fills the sound out a lot more and there isn't much that does reverb like the magicstomp.

I may have to get my self a reverb pedal will see depends how airy my new pedal is. It's like the boutique of the boutique. :D :D :D

Hey
There are preset chains of effects, but some have up to 8 pages of editability. So there are a lot of posibilities.
The software for the Magic stomp is great, IMO. Wether you like the effects or not is individual, but I tihnk that you get some great sounds in the box, you may have to look for them but they are there. And for the money you get alot really.
I think the reverbs are quit good and the delays aswell. So go try it before you make up your mind.

Fair enough, 8 pages of editability sounds good, but if davidmwilson is correct and each patch has a limit of 2 predetermined (from a list of 63?) effects i.e chorus+distortion, then that hardly sounds like "limitless routing possibilities". But I suppose for the price, even if you liked just 1 or 2 of the effects than it might be worthwhile. Myself, I like to keep anything "digital modeler" out of my effects loop.
You ever notice how almost all digital multi effects seem to always be replaced by a new "better" model. where as tried and true analog gear almost never changes, and even after it gets discontinued its likely to see a rerelease with a higher price tag. :ninja:

Just my 2 cents.

Any of you guys who have one of these (and seem to like it) able to answer my question below about the Performance mode and how it works ??

Cheers,

Cheers,
I answered your question above. You move between one patch or another. Each patch can only contain one 'effect', although the effect might be a combo. But those combos are preset and not editable. That is, if you want say fuzz+filter and it's not on the list of presets you can't do it.

Hi

I'm still considering one of these....

Can anyone give me an objective comparison on the quality of the Chorus on the Magicstomp. Would it be equal in quality to a BOSS Bass Chorus pedal?

My thinking is I need a decent tuner (mine's knackered) which will set me back £55 ish (probably for a Korg one) and I'd like a chorus (again about £55 for a BOSS one, or £75 if the Ashdown one ever turns up in the UK!), so at that price I've nearly paid for a Magicstomp anyway (I've seen them for £120 online).

I'd be grateful for any thoughts from anyone.....

I did a bit of research on this thing but I still have a question. Does anyone knows if this thing has a bypass? Does this bypass suck a lot of tone?

Thanks!

I just took it for a test drive at the local music shop, and was pretty disappointed with what it did to the tone of the bass in the 'off' position. I haven't checked the specs, but I could hear a distinct difference between the unit in the off position and going right into the amp from the bass. Even in the off position, there was a distinctly digital harshness in the high end that was enough to steer this tone snob away . I know several players though who are far beyond my skills who aren't as picky about tone as I am, so there you have it. It sounded way better to me than the Boss ME-50B, which I really didn't like. I pretty much only like really expensive analog stuff :crying:

On my brief journey through the patches, I did find some pretty nice effects that sounded good, including phase, flange, envelope, delays, reverbs, & overdrives. I'd consider putting it into an effects loop that I could bypass.

I also liked the fact that many of the patches allowed the blending of the wet & dry signals, which I want on all bass effects.
