In about 1997, my daughter, Melodie, was about three. I had taken my family and friends to see a concert with Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen (married to each other, two of my favorites). The concert was at a Unitarian Church in Fullerton, California, I think. The opening act was "The Mykles". The mother and father of the band (sorry, I can't remember their names) played six-string guitar and concertina, respectively. These were a couple of deeply homey folks. They owned a boutique guitar/bluegrass instrument shop and had open jams in their parking lot once per month during the summer (June, July, and August). Their daughter, I think she was about 15 then, had her hair dyed chartreuse

and was wearing a very '60's looking dayglo-colored mini dress and go-go boots. She played a gorgeous upright bass. At the break I took my daughter up to meet them. Their daughter squatted down in front of Melodie and said,

"Do you know why I play that big upright bass?"

Melodie shook her head, "no"....

"It's because when I get really tired, I can just leeeeeaaan on it."
