Bass pet peeves

LOL...sure...you like what you like, but the fact that Jimmy plays better bass on organ than many bass players do on stringed bass instruments, is still great for blowing stereotypes clean out of the water IMO

I did not say he was not a great player....Makes it even worse! Plenty to do with a keyboard other than put our fellow bassists out of work! I even hated it when JPJ played bass pedals! Give me fingers or even picks on strings everytime!

+1 on relic'd basses, the acid-washed and artfully kneehole-ripped jeans of the instrument world. I'd be embarrassed to own something that pretends to have honestly earned mojo. No better than fake antiques IMHO.
Good comparison, I recently attempted to explain what a "relic" instrument is to a friend of mine and the jeans analogy is what he came up with.

I don't like basses that are neck heavy. I don't like narrow string spacing. I wish all active basses had an active/passive switch. I don't like lined fretless basses. After three strikes, Gibson basses are as far as I'm concerned, out. I don't like unfinished necks. I don't like reliced basses.

Double corollary annoyance: That my 78 jazz, sold long ago, but THE poster bass for all things wrong with 70's era fender basses; in other words, an absolute DOG, is now considered vintage, worth in excess of $3000 and no doubt being drooled over by some schmuck with a fetish for 'vintage' fender basses. P.S. A certain bass outlet here in Australia has a '69 jazz in stock and they're asking in excess of *cough* SIX GRAND. Absolutely ludicrous.
Yup - I had a 77 J. What a POS. Vintage firewood.

dont place your four dollar glass of wine on my nine hundred dollar rig, that you can't afford to replace, even if its just for a second.
Even if your super sexy and theres a 7% chance in hell that we may bump uglies later, don't touch my stuff until you are told to touch my stuff.

and no pointy headstocks or red bass guitars.

Maybe they should make the top horn go to the eleventh fret.

Might even bring the end of the neck closer by a bit which probably wouldn’t hurt. :)
I agree!Neck dive is my "bone of contention"Especially when extending the upper horn,as you said,is an easy design fix!Why don't makers do this?Don't they test their basses for balance?

Taking a beautifully crafted and finished bass and bashing and scraping the crap out of it (and charging more!!), because somewhere on this planet, someone thinks (and has the cash for), that it is cool to buy a pre aged instrument that he/she has not put the miles on himself! This makes me throw up in my mouth thinking about it..................View attachment 619229

So I take it you only buy brand new guitars? I mean you didn't put any of the wear on the used instruments you bought so how is buying a relic any different?

Organ bass isn't like modern computer kooks putting bassists out of work - Jimmy Smith's feet are *brilliant* and are just part of the music.
