Sitting down and talking. My quotes aren't super accurate, mainly because there was a good deal taken out. Missing context, essentially. But the general ideas of the piece are right on.

loved seeing you on the cover when it came through my door, never listended to NIN before, but i'll definitely give this record a go coz i like your work (still lovin the first Ima Robot album).
just wanted to say:

that silver custom shop Jaguar looks mean. Do you feel that p-pickup makes a tonne of difference? and is that the only difference to the stock model (except for badass bridges). Makes my Jaguar feel like a Squire :( ;)

congrats on the new gig, hope your successes continue

The P-J Jag is cool, but I'm not sure we found the ideal pickups yet. It's meant to be a bit beefier than the stock one. Personally, I find the stock one to be very meaty in passive mode. Active mode I find a bit too glassy on top.

Glad you liked the BP article, that's nice. Tends to make my day every time someone says that they love the first Ima Robot album.

cheers for the info on the p-jag. I recently got hold of of a cheap yammaha attitude special (no Dimarizo pickups), and its my first bass with p-pickups, and that Gibson-style mudbucker is so sweet. Together that configuration has more meat than....well...something with alot of meat in

i heard a few tunes via your website, it got me nodding my head, so i bought the album, and was hooked from Dynomite, by the way, that sick overdrive tone in that song what is that? just a cranked amp? English Muff'n? its beautiful. I read somewhere that you used your Thunderbird for the Ima Robot stuff, if this is true of Dynomite, then i need to rethink my stance on t-birds - i used to have the epiphone one, altho mine doesnt really compare to a gibson with 70s pickups and a BA bridge ;) but i didnt think you could get any top end out of a t-bird.

by the way, i cant listen to the chorus of Dirty Life without wanting to pick up my bass.

Right on....Ima Robot O/D tones are Sans GT2 driving B-15 and a Tube Screamer driving Marshall JTM-45 plexi with Fender Tonemaster 2x12 cab. Dynomite is T-bird, other songs (Dirty Life) are Wal bass, others are P-Bass (Scream). Yeah, my T-birds with the NOS chrome pickups I found in Japan can get very growly/bright.

Cool idea on Nordstrand pickups, I'll check it.

Finally got the mag...giving Jason Falkner such a good shout-out, especially under the circumstances, was a really big and selfless thing to do. Replacing you in the Beck band is tough enough as it is, and your seal of approval has got to make things a million times easier for him and takes nothing away from you. Plus it's a good lesson about not burning bridges. Good article...love the suit on the contents page ;)

Jimmy: thank you. Jason is a friend, and his playing is so sick. He and I played guitar and bass respectively on the Beck song Paper Tiger, a great moment for us both in our careers. He also replaced me in Air when I got more busy with Beck. FYI, Jason didn't actually replace me in Beck's touring band, he just ended up rocking a few songs on the record, so he "replaced" me in that regard. But yeah, I appreciate the sentiment. I have no reason to fear other players, I must embrace the good in everybody I encounter, especially when I respect the hell out of them and their playing moves me. Jason is a rare, rare talent.

Great sentiments, Justin, you seem like a very cool dude who's great to work with. I'm going to put this in my signature--I could stand to take a break from the sarcasm and go with a wise, positive message.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge (and great stories) here, it's much appreciated. I'm a big fan of your work with Beck, and need to check out some of your other stuff. BTW, I remember first noticing you when I saw this bass player with a 'fro bobbing around on the SNL stage performing Sexx Laws.:D

dude, the VTBass is sick. in fact is so sick i dont turn it off, its actually my 'clean' tone, im tempted to get another one just for overdrive.

oh yeah, on a related issue: i noticed a few of your pedals on the Bass player article, and i was just wondering if you run the VT last in your pedal chain? I know most people would, but i dont like the way it messes with the tone of my other overdrives/fuzzes ect so I have it first (my MXR blowtorch doesnt sound right to me into any sort of sansamp). Have you noticed anything like this? and if so, do you find it as a new way of experimenting with tones or a hinderance for when you have a specific tone in mind that you know that you can get, but the VTbass colours it too much?

oh, you may have already talked about this, and if so i apologise but: B:assmaster AND Depth Charge? I know they're not the same, but they come from the same concept. Is this because of the nature of NINs music, or are you just loving them at the moment? (I had the Silicon B:assmaster which was sick, and now i've got the Germanium one, which is still fantastic, but quite different in terms of tone)

sorry to ask all these questions, but you're the man with the answers ;) and plus, i tend to get dirty looks from guitarists who see that my pedalboard is bigger than theirs, and its nice to hear from a working bassist/producer/songwriter who understands that effects arent just for guitarists.
