Bass Player "No-No's" With Fines

Do I pay double? I carry a back-up bass and amp.

+$250 for having tuner, extra strap lock, drill, wire cutters, and extra piezo preamp for acoustic guitarist who bought a backup that day an needed it that night because of a broken string. Happened to me Friday.

$50 fine for improperly winding strings on tuners and/or not trimming strings.

I also have 2 basses and an extra amp head in the trunk.

A fine for a backup bass is dumb. It should be the other way around. A fine for Not carrying a backup.

There should be some offsetting rebates though.

• +$100 for being the only one at the gig with a tuner.
• +10/set for each cable loaned to guitarists
• +10/set for electrical extension cord/power strip rental

Most of us wouldn't even need to get paid if this were the case.

Even though I am a weekend warrior I treat the gig like it is my livelihood. If I was out on tour with a bandmate that didn't see the point in backups, when I discovered that he'd be on his way home. Even with nothing ever failing.

A fine for using an electric tuner? Only if it's non-muting.

$50 fine for audible tuning.
$75 fine for being out of tune 1st song back from break (thats what break is for)
$100 fine per song for playing along with break music.
$100 fine per song (assessed to soundman) for break music songs that the band also plays live.

-Slapping at sound check? I do this because it is conceivably the loudest I will be. Sorry, but many sound guys like a super hard smack on the E so they know what is the loudest I will ever be.

+1. Our old soundguy (super pro) used to actually ask me to slap and pop a few things last thing at sound check to check his max levels and make sure his compressors were set properly. There was certainly no slapping in our set, but when the huge surly soundguy asks for it, what are you gonna do?

I must admit, that as an upright player, I have indeed pulled the pretending to tune after I have an off solo, but hey, it happens to everyone right? At least those without frets, someone's gotta feel my pain

I'd get a $50 fine for my second bass, but I'd argue that since one is tuned standard and the other is DGCF. I'd suggest a $100 fine for no extra strings if you break any.

gotta agree with the "carrying back up bass". I haven't broken a string in over a decade. And I simply don't let my instruments get into a state of disrepair. heck, I rarely even carry spare picks. That would imply that I might drop a pick.
But by far the worst is when a bassist or guitarist has to wank on their instrument when the vocalist is speaking to the audience.
It sounds petty, but it is the equivalent of interrupting, which is disrespectful.
However it is okay if it results in a a spectacular band fight.

actually the first bit is easy peasy. Everyone screws up or plain forgets the uptempo part.
