Bass Player Pet Peeves

Bassist's who noodle in between songs on a gig. So unprofessional. Really annoys me.
Bassist's who say, why more than 4strings?
Closely related to "Jaco only needed 4 strings" ... great, but I don't want to be Jaco, I want to be me. However, I find the variants amusing, like someone on here posted "Jaco only drove the speed limit"

Keyboard players who play LOUD left-hand basslines when there's a bassist there already HEY YO GET OUTTA MY SONIC SPACE DUDE!! :spit:  :scowl:

On a similar note, keyboard players who think THEY can replace every instrument known to man (I'll NEVER forget the day I heard some hotshot declare that guitars and basses will be obsolete real soon, what a DUMBASS! )

Soundmen who insist on making your bass sound like MUD in the mix! :scowl: :( :rollno:

Instrumentalists with big egos who have a morbid need to play fast technical stuff and be the center of attention ALL THE TIME yet can't play a groove to save their lives or just plain SHUT UP when the music calls for silence.

Showoff instrumentalists who buy and carry around truckloads of THE MOST expensive gear and lots of it only to have it all sound like complete CRAP!

Egocentric Divas/Prima-Donnas and Showoff Melismatic Singers like Sireeeen Dijon, Pariah Scarey, Christina GAGulera and Whitney Houston We Have A Problem, USELESS IDIOTS ALL OF 'EM! :rollno:

Uptight/Anal Retentive/Controlling/Micromanaging maniacal people who always try to play God with others.

Back in the late '80s or so, a good friend of mine was showing off his latest Ensoniq/Mirage synth(gotta admit, some of the bass samples were to die for)...eventually, he laughed & said, "See, you're obsolete".
Well, in the end, he failed to see the entire picture; eventually, his killer house band(& trust me, they were a great Top-40/Dance band) became obsolete...replaced by a DJ & a karoke machine.

HEY, i run sound for a local band sometimes. that is in addition to owning a restoration audio studio, working full time in a music store and being a bass player. anywho, obviously being a bass player i take great care in how the bassist sounds. i dont play with the band but...... :crying:

things i dont like :
rap
jimmy buffet
cotton balls
the dentist
metallica
most of new jersey
cooked carrots
overcooked steak= rare people, rare
most of paul mccartneys solo career
roaches
spider webs
brussel sprouts
i think thats it.............maybe

Is this pet peeves that bass players have or pet peeves involving bass players? I think mine covers both.

1. Putting two doors on an entrance and then locking one of them.

2. Not putting up a 'use other door' sign so you know one of them is locked.

3. Trying to get a bass rig through one door.

Especially the one that is locked with no sign.

putting up 2 doors that look like a double door, but then it has a small bar going down the middle so it is bassically 2 seperate doors....

trying to get a bass rig through that single door cause the designer kept it from being a double door.

+1 Keyboard players who think they have a particular rhythm element down and don't...

Soundmen who insist on making your bass sound like MUD in the mix! :scowl: :( :rollno:

+1 I have an MTD 535. When the soundman got through with it (no names, no location revealed), it sounded like a Precision. DUH!

Instrumentalists with big egos who have a morbid need to play fast technical stuff and be the center of attention ALL THE TIME yet can't play a groove to save their lives or just plain SHUT UP when the music calls for silence.

+1 He who plays the most notes wins!

Showoff instrumentalists who buy and carry around truckloads of THE MOST expensive gear and lots of it only to have it all sound like complete CRAP!

My current ongoing pet peeves:

Guitarist and drummer noodling between songs.
Guitarist tuning between every song!
Drummer asking if we're ready after noodling, drinking, or otherwise not paying attention between songs.
Guitarist with too much bass in his signal explaining to me that that is "his" tone and isn't willing to bend a little (making progress on this one)!!!!!!!!!!

I love our band but I would like to see these issues resolved.

+1, expecially the last one. Some drummers I've played with have suffered from this really bad.

A few additions to my pet peeve of people who clap on the one and three...

-people who break wind on the dance floor right in front of the stage
-people who reach up from the audience and to try and shake my hand right in the middle of a song
-backing up endless guitar solos...
-anyone who spills liquid substances on stage
-crappy voltage
-being told that "professional sound and crew are provided" and then finding out the hard way exactly what that means...

Can't believe no one has mentioned-

The pianist who pounds out the ROOT note with with their Left Hand.
...and the related-
The Guitarist who insists on playing every voicing in ROOT position.

right with you brother... you must have missed my post!

- keyboard players who feel the need to play double left hand octaves in every song and totally kill your dynamic

- drummers who drop time during their bar long drum fills

Guitarists that change the key of a song in progress to one in which I need my five string and don't tell me. (did lead to a bass solo a little under the twelfth fret and some upper register tapping)

rythem guitarists without rythem

the peavey J style bass I use when I break an important string (I busted my e sring and was thankful I was playing it on my five)
