Bass Player Pet Peeves

I remember a time when someone walking down the street, animatedly talking to themselves was considered a nutter. These days, I see loads of people doing it on their bluetoothy-thingies, and I have trouble not laughing.

Mind you, I guess I just hate mobiles and talking on them in general.

Other bass players who are hung up on bizarrely purist notions of what actually defines a bass player, often to their own detriment: "No, I don't use a pick. That's what guitarists do. No, no distortion, either. Pedals are for guitarists!"

I mean, please. You are missing out on so many cool avenues for musical exploration for no good reason.

o Water that drips on your pants while using public sinks
o People that don't wash their hands after eating or after using the bathroom and ask if they can play my instrument.
o Guitarist that play nothing but metal.
o Guitarist that think playing any other instrument is easy, just because they play the guitar.
o People that claim they are awesome but actually suck. If you suck, you suck. Be honest for once in your damn life.
o Girls that like you only because you play an instrument.
o Putting in a new battery in a pedal or active bass and it dies within an hour.
o Kids that play music games and think you suck because they can score high points on a "difficult" song and are automatically better than you; regardless of the fact they don't know how to play an instrument or that you're playing an actual instrument. Thank goodness Guitar Hero died...
o People that think everything from Apple is a Godsend and worship every Apple product that begins with a lowercase "i" and prance around like it's the best thing ever for the next 8-14 months until they release another version.
o People that are obsessed with getting the latest cell phones ALL THE TIME. It's a phone, get one that does what you need it to do and stick with it. If you need to do more, then use a computer, tool.
o FOX News "Specialists"
o Video games that still, to this very day, are programmed without checkpoints.
o Toilet paper rash.
o Insects, all of them.
o Dog sh-t, stepping in dog sh-t, picking up dog sh-t, cleaning off your shoe that recently stepped on dog sh-t, and ass-hats that let their dogs sh-t in your lawn and just leave it there. Carry a God damn sack with you and pick it up before I place it in a burning sack and toss it into YOUR lawn!
o Alarm clocks that allow the soother to be used as an alarm.
o That scratch from roundwound bass strings.
o Tabs that seem as though they were made by the deaf.
o Any bass with neck-dive.
o Limited Edition colors on ANYTHING.
o People that ask riddles that make you feel stupid.
Q: "How does a Hunchback sleep?"
A: "With their eyes closed."

Being the only one in the band with an ear, e.g. having to shout that the guitarist is playing a minor instead of a major in many songs. Is it really that hard to hear?

The drummer who only brings sticks to some gigs, as he expects the guitarist to bring his kit instead.

The bandleader who gets gigs, and tells us that we are playing them instead of asking us if we can play them.

Moaning at me for having other commitments (bear in mind I'm 16) including cricket, work, and coursework.

Guitar players with 'top quality' instruments taking the mick out of my "mexican PoS".

Volume wars at rehearsal in a small room. I have invested in earplugs, and I hope the rest of the band does before they do any permanent damage.

Fret buzz *shudders*

EVERYTHING he said!!! :bassist::D

- Significant other bandmates who constantly bicker during practice.
- Scratchy pots that never get cleaned
- Monitor amps that blow up during a show
- Drummers who play a song in a totally wrong type of beat during a show even though they've played it 1000 times before
- Losing focus while playing a fast repeating phrase and realizing that you're about to screw it up and there's no way to avoid it without divine intervention
- Bass players who have no problem singing lead while playing (I'm jealous)
