Bass sound

Although not a popular choice, I'd recommend a Boss Bass Overdrive pedal, OBD-3. I have one and it works great for that type of thing. Most people hate Boss pedals because they're essentially "consumer grade", but I've had good luck with mine and I like what it does. Other than that, you should be able to duplicate that sound pretty easily with almost any bass and the right settings, but bear in mind you need something overdriven.

Yer hero is playing a Thunderbird of some description. He doesn't get any camera love unless he is doing backup vocals, typical. The mix is pretty friendly to the bass though. You can hear his lows when he lets it ring out and he's quite present between the guitars and the kick.

You need the pick and the overdrive for sure. Maybe you need compression to get the digging in highs to punch through without bottoming your speakers, I never played with a pick. Youtube is compressed anyway.
