Bass that exceeded expectation?

My USA Peavey Millenniums. They put my StingRay 5 on the shelf for a while. I pulled the SR out the other day for practice, and quickly realized why I haven't been playing it! The Mills are IT for me right now- they feel great and sound AMAZING. I wish I could find more!

I got Squier Classic Vibe 60's Jazz on 2007, for $250, no tax and free shipping by M-friend to experiemt some modi and setup.
That was gorgeous. Fabulous pickups changed my mind to replace w fender 60s. Neck looks and feels real vintage, nicely finished, and great fret job was added.
Now i see it with $370 pricetagged and totally understand that it worth more.

No one has said it yet, but my little Indonesian Hofner Ignition is the sweetest instrument I could imagine. It's a near-professional piece of work for a knockoff price. Mine came with a couple of high frets, so I have no illusions about it, but after a setup and a bit of a shave here and there (by a reputable luthier), it's a beauty to play, and the neck is straight as an arrow. I use no effects, and get a real thumping bottom. The narrow neck and short scale are not for obsessive he-men, but if you can be secure enough in your manhood, this tiny violin bass is a honey.

- Peavey Cirrus are ALWAYS amazing. I was addicted to them for a while and was up to about 10 USA's

- My $20 West Pbass I got at a yard sale. I repainted it and did a few minor mods. It is the BEST sounding Pbass I've ever owned

- The Squier Classic Vibe is simply AMAZING. I would take one ANY day over a USA model, if I were a Fender person.

Ibanez basses. I have four now. I'm constantly surprised by how well they play and sound. I don't understand how they can make great basses for $500 when I go to the store and try out expensive basses that dissapoint.
+1
Specifically, my SR500...once I got TI flats on it, it played like an absolute dream, and has tone for days...EVERYBODY who's tried it loves it, one guy even offered me a grand for it...(you can get them at GC for 595, probably 550 if you promise not to kick the sales guy in the nuts) I've played a number of Alembics, P's, J's, Carvins, Ricks, and even Warwicks (the 'wicks were close) but NOTHING felt as good as that 500 buck special...

My Peavey Fury and Palaedium basses.

Music Man Sterling. Much better than anticipated. I just got it, used, did a little clean and adjust w/ new strings and this little thing is awesome. Love This Neck! Frets are worn but still no buzzing, no dead spots, it's just on the money all around.
FWIW I've played a lot of stuff over the past 35 years, and I've never been a Music Man guy

My Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. sometimes I just sit across the room and just look at it. I love the look, feel, build quality. It has that Jazz Bass sound on lock and I especially like the very thin neck. A very solid passive bass all the way around.

Pretty much ALL Squiers. I always expect them to be nice but I almost always end up wanting to buy whichever one I'm playing at the time.

There was also this super weird looking bass that I played, I forget the name, but it looked like it came straight out of the 80s. Played and sounded like a million bucks. Too bad it was so funny looking and only had 4 strings.

That would be the Squier Katana; did it look like this?

Danelectro basses. They really exceed expectations

+1! I picked one up at a local guitar shop and found I loved the tone. However, being a 6'3" guy, I didn't feel like looking like a goof playing it in public.

For many years, I wanted a 5 string Cirrus. I built hundreds of customs on the Peavey bass builder, in every possible combination. I dreamed about Cirri, I listened to clips on YT, and eye-humped pics of them here on TB.

About 3 years ago, an opportunity arose to trade for a walnut/wenge 5 here, so I went for it. Guess what? The bass has consistently exceeded my expectations, which were insanely high. I love the way it plays, how it sounds, looks, and feels. I wouldn't change anything about it, not even the gold hardware (although that took some time to grow on me).

Perhaps the craziest part is that I'd never ever played a Cirrus of any kind prior to purchase, and had only ever seen one in action. But all my research told me that it would be 'right' for me, and it was. Cool!

I'd love to hear from those of us who've also had a bass deliver beyond expectation.

Wow, we have the same story. Just I wasn't hip to TB at the time. I "knew" I wanted one. I just had never held one, or heard good recordings. I just went with the reviews. The first week I had it home I played two gigs and recorded 6 demos tracks. I love my G&L and PBass, but the Cirrus went to the front of the herd after that first week.
