Bass with a whammy bar?

I think this Aria was set up at the factory with a Kahler but I could be wrong. It does rock though.View attachment 1045846

I have an old mid eighties Kahler I was going to pit on an Aria in the Eighties. Couldn't;t hack up an Aria. I plan, among many plans, to build an Aria SB reproduction using the Kahler.

I have a Kahler trem on my AV custom fretless. I knew when ordering that it'll not get that much real use but i got it for a toy to play if you know what i mean. It's nice with vibratos, kind of makes them deeper or something. So to sum it up, i think it's ok for soloing (but i should practice more to make it really worth it)but for normal playing in band, i really don't see much of use for it. But it looks cool, and since there are no pictures in this thread yet...

With a fretless, couldn't you just use your whammy fingers?

I'm researching whether I should put a Kahler tremelo on my custom bass. I'm finally going to have Shawn May build one for me. I'm using one of Les Claypool's CT basses as a loose template, but am having two 35DCS EMGs installed. I've been talking to another guy who Shawn built a bass for and he swears by the tremelo. I'm just not sold on it yet. I'm concerned about keeping the bass in tune, the pain of having to deal with it, etc. But it might be a cool tool to have. Just not sure. I'm leaning against the idea.

My first 6 string Bass was a 1963 Burns Split Sound 6 String Bass which I purchased in 1964 it cost me £120. It had a whammy bar.

I have one on my Christopher Small CT clone . It stays in tune but I just don't use it that much . Ma Pawnshop VI has wank bar , after the "staytrem" upgrade it's super smooth .

Thanks guys. I decided against the Kahler and went with a Hipshot Style A instead. The Kahler's do look slick, but I just don't see myself using it. When talking to a friend about it, she said, "Get what you KNOW you'll like. Experimentation is for less expensive things."

Bah, she sounds like a bringdown

Anyway, tuning on them isn't such a big deal. I have one on a bass, and it stays in tune perfectly. The trick is to tune it while you work the bar and bend the strings. That way, it gets used to the bending and will come back in tune. Takes slightly longer, but works. Helps to have a graphite nut like my bass does, too, but you can still do it on a bass without a graphite nut.

I have had this bass for years. I must admit a whammy bar on a bass is as useless as boobies on a bullfrog. But it sure looks cool.
