Bass with a whammy bar?

I'm pretty sure the locking nut just makes it so you can't cause the tuners them self to detune, or the string to bind in the nut. This tension thing your talking makes no sense.

Tuners cannot detune themselves unless the centre poles are actually slipping.
If you tried turning a tuner from the point where the strings are attached you would destroy it.

first of all: a tremsystem (regardless if it´s on guitar or on bass) is more an additional gimmick/tool for expressional playing.

remember: first of all the bass is a rhythm instrument.
but i´ve got enuff space and ideas where i can really use the whammy. but just like all other guitarplayers: not ALL the time.

but for my case i´d say: the bridge itself increased the allover sound of that faker a LOT!! i recognize now much more brightness and punch.

for sure i had to replace the cheapo stock plastic nut with one of that fantastic graph-tec nuts.
i raped my trem the last few days like hell, and my bass is still in tune!

Les Claypool has used the tremolo a lot on older songs, mainly songs from Frizzle Fry.

I'm really interested with how it would turn out.
Washburn makes one but I haven't played it and I won't buy it because 1. It could be crap 2. Tremolo problems (ie. Licensed Floyd Rose Locking, untuning etc)...

My opinion is that "if the 'idiot stick' was a such a great idea, then everyone's bass would have one."

(And I mean no offense to the idiots who know how to use the stick)

I have heard enough guitarists complain about their whammy bars to make me never even consider the possibility of putting one on my bass. Claypool can make it work but I'm sure he has a bass tech.

This is an old thread but since people are posting again I've always wondered how the kahler affects action. Can you get low action with these or does it put the action at medium height?

for a lot of the basses out there, the Kahlers will need to be sunk a slight bit. they are top mount, but need a little routing to get the action set-up right.

...Or, on a bolt-on, raise the neck with shims..

You've got to rout to give clearance for the cam & springs:

Recessing the whole unit isn't compulsory.

I would personally have no use for one on any bass. Hell, I disabled the one on my Strat, 'cause it would be useless to me for the kind of music I want to play on it.

I have had a bass or 2 around with a kahler on it for decades. I still have my Charvel explorer and Charvel model2 with them on.
I have found many standard songs we have played thru the years that a little bend or pull just makes it sound more natural.

There was a guy on one of the Gretsch Owners Forums I used to belong to, who put a Bigsby on an Electromatic bass a couple of years ago. As I remember, it was a lot of work, and he was pretty reticent about how well it worked (not very, I imagine). But, he was a drummer, anyway, so.... IMO, it's one of those things with very limited usefulness; probably none at all for a lot of us - and another example of the "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" principle.

My Squier VI came with one and while I don't use it much I wouldn't rip it out either. Most of the time its use on a bass would be lost in the din but occasionally. ..

Might want to check out the Hipshot tremolo as well, different route, more like a strat tremolo's, less visually obvious than the Kahler, especially if the arm is out.
