i could use some of that today. ...have about an inch of random frozen stuff falling from the sky... Sleet or S'nain. Take yer pick. It's nasty stuff. Completely not biking or even driving weather even with our AWD vehicles.

Do it. It'll be cool.
I actually pulled a kid's bike out of a river yesterday, it'll be good parts for the project. The fork is obvious, same with the front wheel, but I think the stays could be welded to the fork to support the rack, and we'd just need material for the rack and to extend the fork to make up the geometry.

Same here, if I didn't leave a day earlier than planned, I'd be stuck on the parts of the highway that they shut down because they couldn't clear it.

About 65F here today. Rode in T shirt and shorts. Got around the lake for the first time in 16 years (been out of state much of that time). Dozens if not hundreds of pelicans floating on the lake, each one surrounded by loons and gulls, kind of like a battleship surrounded by a flotilla of lesser vehicles. I'm not sure I've ever seen pelicans there before. (I've been riding there since 1976.)

Out for a short spin this afternoon. We got a good foot of snow in the last week. Most trails were well packed down but it was starting to get soft with the above freezing temps. Supposed to get much milder and rain a lot in the next four or five days…Yuck

Well, that trail is now an inch deep in rain over top of ice!

How about this little short to relive the experience from the other day?

Vague, picture-less update to that project: I'm back in Kingston and 600-ish km away from welding gear and supplies.

We *did* start moving on the project, though:
1) The bike was torn apart.

2) the rear stays are going to make up the bottom end of the fork and the supports for the rack.

3) the rack has been welded together from a desk that was scrapped - it already has dropouts and lugs welded on for v-brakes in the exact spot needed.

4) the fork from the kid's bike will make up the top end of the fork, but we'll need to extend the steerer tube as it's an inch and change short - we've got materials for it somewhere, probably, but we'll have to find tubes in very specific diameters, so this will be a big speed bump.

As you can imagine, if I believed in spirit animals, mine would be a raccoon.

Correcting point 3: the rack has been welded as its own assembly with the rear stays having already been cut off the kid's bike frame, which has v-brakes and drop-outs on them already, but haven't been welded to the rack yet.

Edit: the top and downtubes have also been cut off, one of them fits into the other and makes a great cheater bar for those difficult bolts.

Another nice day for a winter ride. After last weeks rain (and reduction of the snowpack to a base of ice) we got a little snow over the last couple of days. Perfect riding conditions!

No snow in Kingston OR Windsor since the storm before Christmas.

Gotta love that scenery, and Norco makes a cool bike. Have you noticed any difficulty pedaling with those massive wheels? If I could notice a difference between two brands of 26*2" wheels, I figure a 26*4" would feel like a whole different thing altogether.

Oh for sure takes more effort compared to 26 or 29. I have these inflated to about 8-10PSI so there’s more rolling resistance. Compared to my FS 26” Santa Cruz, this is a different beast. Steering is a lot slower on the fatty so I have to think ahead a bit. But once I’m rolling I barely think about it being a fat tire bike.

Got another 30cm/11” of the white stuff yesterday so it was time for a ride today! Trails are groomed but still a bit soft for good riding. The footpaths were better/more firmly packed down. Just a brilliant day in the Deep North!

Incidentally, that broken tree behind me is where I got the wood for this (bowl carving in process…silver maple)

Edit: see post below…

So, I found a 26" wheel, and the rear hub from that kid's bike was a singlespeed coaster brake. I had to use some of the spokes for the front wheel for that fork project - and being steel and having been in a lake for a good few months that rear rim is pretty suspect. So I let the hub sit with some gun oil on it for some weeks until it came apart. That hub, in spite being nearly immersed in water, was pretty close to immaculate on the inside (probably all the grease).

Anyways, here's that hub laced up to the 26" rim using the same spokes - they're a bit long and the rim is all kinds of messed up from my sloppy job - but I DIY'd a wheel truing stand this afternoon, I figure if I stay at it all week I might have a usable wheel. The V-brakes on my commuter, as well as the derailleur, are really having a hard time living outside in the winter - I really can't keep up with keeping them functional, and I think switching to this next winter (or even sometime in Feb) would definitely help.
