Basses with EMGs?

Hey I personally don't like using EMGs in my basses because I don't like active pickups. I play more indie/ambient type stuff and the pointy ESP bass that I have them in doesn't fit in with that scene. Despite this, I can attest to the fact that ESPs are good with a proper set-up and the look of them shouldn't be too much of a bother if you are in the metal scene.

Have you considered Schecter's Hellraiser Extreme-5? It has a pair of EMG 40TW pickups in it. You can run the pickups in either humbucker and/or single coil modes. 35" scale, neck through, string through bridge, ebony fretboard, solid mahogany body and neck, 3-band eq.

If he's wanting the EMG DC sound, he won't like the TW's at all

Maybe, but not likely.

The TW's are splittable CS pickups, which sound very different from the DC's; warmer with more mids and a flatter top end.

Personally when I had my Euro 5 I preferred the TW/CS pickups to the DC's, as DC's have an inherently aggressive voicing that you can't really dial out, but that's why some guys love them.

The only thing I didn't care for about TW's is the massive output decrease when in single coil mode, though from what I've heard the TWX's have solved this issue.

All food for thought, and as someone else mentioned above you have a ton of easily installable pickup options with EMG 40 sizes, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to try other things; I'd actually recommend the Aguilar DBC's over the DC's, as they have the same clarity without the harshness and are more organic and dynamic.

+1 to everything MDBass said. If you want 40DC's, Spector is the only way to fly.

Big EMG fan here, have a variety of them in several basses. Bought one of these Schecter Session Riot fivers. With a DC40 and a 40J it delivers that big sound we love about EMG. Lotta bass for the money. Might be worth a look.
