Wayman Tisdale. He played for the Pacers and one of his signature traits was gum chewing. He was always chewing. He was my young 6 year old son’s favorite player. Quick story about him.
My son and I attended the 1987 preview of the Indiana Pacers. It was Reggie Miller’s rookie season. Following the showcase of their talent they had a question and answer period. My son wanted to ask Wayman a question but he was ignored. After that we stood outside the locker room waiting for him to come out. He did and I caught his attention. I mentioned my son, Tanner, wanted to ask him a question but didn’t get the opportunity.
He squatted down and said, “Tanner, do you have a question for me?” My son replied, “Yes sir, do you have another piece of gum?” I couldn’t contain my laughter, nor could Wayman. He replied, “No I don’t, but why don’t you and I take a walk to the concession stand?”
He and my son walked off together and about 15 minutes later they returned. I couldn’t thank him enough.
Very seldom do you meet stars like that. Malcom Jamal Warner was also one of those guys.
It’s with heavy heart that I say RIP. There are few like you and most are gone too soon.
