Bassists that look really mean

aa.jpg

Nuff said.

i cant believe these two dont get a mention---!!--!--!!!

the compulsively nasty Sid vicious and the famously unhinged Dee Dee ramone!!! (cheeers)

cause lets face it, having intimidating band members is just good rock n roll sense

I never pictured them as scary. I don't think their fellow band members did either. (Johnny Rotten once said, ""Sid couldn't punch his way out of a bag of crisps!" in regards to his name.) They seemed more like the crazy uncle in the family. From the Ramones documentaries I've seen it was more like, "Oh that's Dee Dee doped up again. He's a CRAZY guy!" Joey was a lot more intimidating.

I think people need to distinguish between scary and having the credentials to beat someone up. I'm sure there's tons of bass players that can beat me up. Charles Mingus was one scary muthaf*cka though.

I did a little Wikipedia research on Mingus;

"While onstage at a memorial concert he reportedly attempted to crush his pianist's hands with the instrument's keyboard cover, then punched trombonist Jimmy Knepper in the mouth. Jackie McLean once stabbed Mingus after Mingus punched him, fearing the bassist was about to kill him."

Crazy.

I've heard a tale of Mingus punching an audience member in the face for talking on the phone during his bass solo..

also heard of his band members pulling knives on him to keep him at bay, not sure about guns though

Did anyone say Jonas Hellborg? The guy never smiles! When I first saw him with McLaughlin he had a shaved head and looked very intense...

In the middle of his solo he hit the strings and had a tone of reverb on it and it made a real loud BOOM and he stood up. (he was sitting the whole show).

It was quit a show...

I bought a bass off a guy who saw Jaco Pastorius in a small club in New York once, he reckons he chased the whole band off the stage about half an hour in and grabbed the guitar off the guitarist. Then he done a 20 minute guitar solo and stormed off.

Jaco also died after an altercation with a bouncer so I'd say he might have been a character not to be messed with.

good one, he definitely comes across as mean, but he is a cool guy in person (to some people, though :smug:). I got to meet him at the Warwick booth last Anaheim NAMM and he was very animated and happy to talk with someone was knowledgeable of his discography.

Here's the solo I was talking about.

I'm sure he must be a col guy... but he looks so serious!

A secondary point is that size or build is not end-all determining factor for toughness or fighting ability. I'm 5'10" 215 and workout daily, but a hungover Oscar de la Hoya sick with the flu could kick the crap out of me in a fair fight.

Bingo. I teach judo at a local college, and you just can't tell by appearances. Some of the big, scary-looking toughguys are the biggest babies around when it comes to pain. And some of the weeniest looking skinny hippy guys can turn out to be wirey little animals that can tie you up in knots. Being big and strong are advantages, but they're not an automatic win, not even close.
