Bassists that look really mean

I'm not a big scary guy and I can barely throw a punch, but I have to say that I'm one of the scariest people you will ever meet. Why? You may laugh and say, "Jim, you couldn't beat anyone up."

I can't beat you up but I CAN kill you.

Wasn't Mingus a little on the crazy side. He doesn't look scary, but I've read some interesting stories about his temperment.
YES! My roommate had the great Jackie McLean as a professor in college for a jazz history class. When some students asked why they had not covered Mingus yet, he looked 'em in the eye and screramed "Mother****er tried to stab me!"

I was just riffing on the past Bass Player articles where he goes over his rig like it is some huge mystery. Loosely quoted, "You'll never figure out my rig, I have lines on my pedal board that don't even do anything."

wow, that's pretty "freaked out".... Is his tone, something that is really that sought after? No jab, just curious.

I just realized something. How did you know my name?

Please say that mods have super secret mod powers that regular posters couldn't fathom, much less think of using.
:ninja:

If anyone know is this is true, post the answer:
I have heard that members of Mingus' band carried guns to protect themselves from HIM.
I have heard from cats that are Mingus-o-philes, that he had a temper that was pretty fierce... so who knows, yeah that sounds about right.

David Vincent of Morbid Angel. He's a big guy in person, like 6'5" or so, and he sounds like a grizzly.

Glen Benton of Deicide. This guys basically a satanic lunatic, so I'd never want a fight with him....he might eat my soul.

Also Alex Webster is a bit of a psycho, he could definately kick my ass. He's so badass, he gives his own fans the finger while he's playing!

In regards to Pete Steele, while he looks to be a pure raw-meat eater, the times I've met him he's been unbelievably nice and taken time out for fans. Once was as myself and some friends were just entering a club in NYC as he and his ladyfriend were leaving - we asked him how he was doing and was the scene any good inside. He replied "Don't waste your money on the cover, it's dead tonight." No "leave me alone in my private life" attitude, just a bit of New Yorker-to-New Yorker advice.

The second was the Black Sabbath/Pantera/Deftones tour in '99. We were to the right side of the stage, and could see him, Josh, and Johnny hanging with Evan from Biohazard "behind"/to the side of the stage. Our section started up the classic "You SUCK!" TON chant, and about 10 minutes later he had had come up to our section, signed autographs and chatted, and was extremely cool considering it wasn't even his show to promote. He was there to chill with friends of his own, and still made the effort for his fans. :D

As for a bassist that could kick my ass, I certainly wouldn't want to tangle with Nikki Sixx. Not that he's especially large or physically dangerous, but I'll be the last person to screw with a guy who'll take a swing at an audience member with his bass!. It's not size that scares me, it's people who simply don't give an F about the consequences of their actions. :help:

Yeah, with Type O Negative's music, I can tell he's a big scary guy... but by the end of the album I usually feel sorry for him. Goth kids are just scarier emo kids... and I'm not afraid of emo kids at all... so that makes goth kids... normal.

Hmm... I need to check my math on that one.

I remeber Joe Nerve telling a story about Pete Steele letting him borrow an upright bass and he pretty much just met him! Now that is a cool guy!

I did a little Wikipedia research on Mingus;

"While onstage at a memorial concert he reportedly attempted to crush his pianist's hands with the instrument's keyboard cover, then punched trombonist Jimmy Knepper in the mouth. Jackie McLean once stabbed Mingus after Mingus punched him, fearing the bassist was about to kill him."

Crazy.

jaco had something of that, not the same thing, but i've heard some stories that he wrecked a drum set with his bass, and tried to wreck some basses he loaned from some fans. correct me if this is wrong
