Bassists you think more should know of....

Stephan Fimmers from Necrophagist
Steve DiGiorgio (His playing on Death - Individual Thought Patterns is marvelous)
The aformentioned Sean Malone
Tony Choy
Erlend Caspersen
Avishai Cohen
Paul Jackson (Herbie/Headhunters)
Alphonso Johnson
Victor bailey

Cornell Williams from Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. That guy has amazing time, feel, groove, do not miss that quartet if you have a chance.
Nick Daniels and Tony Hall from Dumpstaphunk. They both played with the Neville Brothers too.
Marc Pero - Papa Grows Funk
Jeff Andrews

Wow, I can't believe how many names HAVEN'T been mentioned! Here are my picks:

Guy N'Sangue (Jean-Luc Ponty, various session)

Etienne M'Bappe (Ultramarine, Salif Keita, solo)

Mike "Funky Ned" Neal (Rare Essence, Maxwell, etc.)

Richard from Corduroy (British "Acid Jazz" group)

Bobby Watson (Rufus)

Habib Faye (Youssou N'Dour)

I'm a huge fan of progressive rock (metal/krautrock. If anyone here likes the same, I STRONGLY urge you to check these guys out.

1.) John Glascock/Jethro Tull - This man has monster chops.

Check out his work with Carmen. "Fandangoes In Space" is a bass player's dream.

And as you enjoy prog, check out Ray Shulman of Gentle Giant.

Joe Bouchard should have props for his work with Blue Oyster Cult.

Jeremy Davis of Paramore.
he used to play a 5 string, i dont know why he doesnt anymore.
but can rock a 4 definitely.

Mike Dirnt of Green Day

Arion Salazar formerly of Third Eye Blind

These guys have some great rifts, but people dont take the time to listen to the bass lines...

Good for you. I am a Backdoor fan. What a cool trio. Bass Player 5 Stars*****

Have a great one....... Later
Colin Hodgekinson.(Hope I spelled his name right).

Astounding British player.Had a band called Back Door with Sax,electric bass, drums in the late 60's- early 70's. Made a record or two for Warner/Reprise.

I don't usually go for these super players but this gentleman blew me away.Amazing chordal technique & all the skill you can imagine & then some& even with all the flash,he kept the groove! I heard & saw him before I heard Jaco. Back Door sounded like a 4 or 5 player band!

He pops up here & there, but it seems he prefers to keep a low profile.I think he still does a bit of session work in Britian.

Ian Rogers-Still Pending, awesome kid, prodigy bassist
Andrew Turel-Current Still Pending bassist. Not as good as Ian, but still good.

Josh McDowell-Crooked X, Less Awesome than the first 2, and plays a couple root songs, but still pretty good.

FYI, Still Pending has 2 members from 7th grade and one from 6th grade, and all of Crooked X members are 15. Both have albums out and are signed! (Though Crooked X actually tours, Still Pending does not, they only play county fairs etc.)

Andy West - formerly with the Dixie Dregs, the old Steve Morse band. I thought he fulfilled my ideal role for the bass - Ninja 1 on guitar, backup Ninja 2 on bass. I personally love bass/guitar or other melodic instrument playing parts together and he was one of the best doing this with Steve Morse.
The last thing I've heard of him doing was something called fwap, but not anything else at least lately (I think he's working as a software engineer now).

The guy who's been playing with Eric Johnson lately. I can't remember his name. Wierdly, I lived in Austin, TX for 20 years and had never seen or heard of this guy the entire time, until he started playing with EJ. Had this old jazz bass and that was it, but he's just a fantastic player.

1.) John Glascock/Jethro Tull - This man has monster chops.
4.) Derek Mo Moore/Nektar - Bassist of one of my absolute favorite bands, absolutely genious in his playing, but then again so is everyone else in that band...
5.)Gary Thain/Uriah Heep - Possibly one of the most perfect bassist I've ever heard.

Very nice additions. In no particular order I'll have to go with...

1. Alphonso Johnson - I like Jaco more, but I just don't think people give enough credit to Alphonso. Most of the Black Market album was indeed Alphonso on bass, and a lot of people credit Jaco for his lines.

2. Matt Tufano (Vegetable Oil & The Spicey Crackers) - Just because

3. Rob Derhak (moe.) - He's the man, plays Ritter basses by the way Matt

4. Paul Zamost (The Effigies) - One of my biggest influences, no doubt about it

5. Shyunsuke "Xenon" Ishikawa (RX, Seikima-II) - Very Funky

6. Chris Squire (Yes) - If you like Rutherford, you'll like Squire

7. Tony Levin - even though a lot of his work uses a stick, he's one of the greatest session musicians of all time and has one of the best track records in bass history

Gotta love JJ Burnell too, saw that up there
