BBE Sonic Maximizer- the horses mouth

howdy stephen,

besides the difference that EASon has mentioned, the 362 uses a different processor chip than the 482i/882i. the processor in the 362 is a much lower headroom version of our Sonic Maximizer. It also exhibits a slightly higher THD spec.

of course the 882i is also balanced in and out. the 482i and 882i use the same exact chipset.

having said that, many people use the 362 in their guitar and bass rigs, and pa systems (i did for years before coming to work here), with great success.

hope that helps.

When the new 482 came out with what appeared to be mostly cosmetic changes, musician's friend offered a deal I couldn't pass up on the older units. I was using it in the effects loop on a Hartke 5000, but did not find that it made that big of a difference. I ended up using a smaller rack case and moving the BBE over to my simple recording set-up because I still liked it there even though I do very little recording. I am definitely thinking about re-hooking up the BBE in my stage rig and trying some experiments with the settings. Normally, I kept the controls at about 1:00 o'clock as I didn't think I needed to add that much. BTW, I do run my amp in a biamp mode to a 2x10 and a 1x15 (Avatars). From what I've read here, I suppose that either using the effects loop or, if possible, preamp out to BBE to power amp in would be far better than putting the BBE immediately after my bass and before the preamp.
Any comments on my settings or location of the BBE?

so would it be worth it to get the 482i then?

Judd (or anyone else)... as usual I'm looking for assistance. I just picked up my new MaxCom (compressor w/BBE) and am eager to figure out all of its features and such... however, I gig with it tomorrow and don't have time for my usual loooong learning curve.

Got any suggestions for the compressor and/or BBE settings that will give me a nice musical base to start from? Should I run channel 1 thru channel 2 for added versatility? Any settings with the ratio, attack & release I should stay away from?

Thanx

gate off
threshold about -10 to -5
ratio about 3:1 to 5:1
use the "auto" mode for attack and release
output at "0" to +5
bbe start with both controls at about 12 o'clock.

that should get you started.

No help for poor ole me? J/k

sorry.

it's powered from 110ac mains.

yes, it will improve the sound of any rig. try to patch it in between your pre-amp out and power amp in if you have a patch point. if not, put it in your f/x loop, it'll still be great.

i hope this helps. sorry about the delay.

I was just looking at dbx Subharmonic Units (the 120A and the 120XP) and with help, I've actually decided against it (them) in fear that I'll blow my speakers (4x10 cab and 1x15 cab). Instead I was referred to the BBE Sonic Maximizer.

Simple.

But wait, which one?? There are a whole slew of these things! I have a rackspace free and I wanna fill it with one but I don't know which one to get. Musician's Friend sells them new ranging from $99.99 to $249.99.

some guys really like the 362 at 99.99, the 482i has quite a bit more headroom so if that's an issue you should look at it: 179.99

the 882i is all XLR-balanced so it's probably not for you. the 882i and 482i are identical except for the balancing.

the Sonic Maximizer in our BMAX bass preamp is the 482i/882i circuit.

maybe some others on the board can assist you by sharing their own personal experiences.

good luck

I actually use a dbx 120A Subharmonic synth in my effects loop BEFORE a BBE 362, and it sounds amazing. If you use your ears and good common sense, there is no fear of blowing your cabs. Depending on my situation, I use a 400w2 x10 combo, or an 800w head and cab set up with either an 8x8 or a 2x12. I've never worried about blowing anything, I just make sure the levels are set properly and don't push too hard.

:D

@djnylonpants,

How would you compare the sound difference when going into the pwr amp from the pre as compared to going directly into the pre's input with the BBE in a pre/pwr set-up?

@RevGroove,

You sure must keep your settings VERY mild on your Dbx120 while using the cabs you speak of...

Not really...

LF Boost at 1 o'clock
Subharmonics at about 3 o'clock
the two synthesized freqencys (24-36 and 36-56 hz respectively) at about 2 o'clock.

Before those two cabs, I used it with a Goliath III 700W 4 ohm cab, or with a 2x10/1x15 stack and a 400W head...no problems, even with the 200w 2x10 on it's own. Again, common sense and a good ear, you shouldn't have any problems...

the effect will be much more pronounced if you can get the process further downstream.

i hope that helps.
