I love and respect the Beatles, and fully appreciate their influence, evolution, etc. I'm a huge fan, and bought all the remastered CD's a few years ago. I also seem to like them even more over time. I'm not about to say the Stones are/were better, but I usually gravitate toward darker, harder stuff and roots rock, so, more often than not, I prefer listening to them over the Beatles. That's why the Stones got my vote.

This might really be splitting hairs, but if you look hard enough, you can find some pretty dark Beatles music. For example, Lennon's "Julia" -- named after his mother, who was hit by a car and killed when he was 15 or so, and just when he was getting to know her -- is quite wrenching to listen to. (At least, for me.)

Julia..... That is the name of my daughter.. named after that song. Love the guitar in that.

OK, think about it like this: The most important instrument in a band is the bass (obviously). So, the most important member is the bassist. Which means the band with better bassist is the better band.

Sir Paul is an amazing bassist. Amazing talent, both as a bassist and song writer. He has written the most memorable and best bass lines (and songs) in the history of music.

As for..uh...umm...the Stones' bassist, not so much.

So any way you look at it, the Beatles are the clear winner!

Beatles 100%.
I grew up with both bands, but the Beatles were ALWAYS on in my parents' house growing up.
One of the best bands of all time.

Stones I don't care for, never really have.
They're good, but I just don't care for any of their songs or albums.

Beatles 100%, any day.

May as well start the debate now - another vote for Buddy Holly. An incredible sound from a three piece band, and considering his short career, a fantastic catalogue of songs. I always thought he was one of the greatest losses to Rock and Roll.

Not to go with the current, or the Beatlemania, but we all know this is not a fair comparison. The Stones aren't one my favourite bands (so far, my only fave tune is "Gimme Shelter") but I can't deny their impact on modern music.

But then, we got the Beatles, who basically re-invented modern music. Plus, they're very versatile, and I have a few more fave songs of them than of the Stones. Granted, some Beatles songs can be pretty boring to me, but their song list is pretty extensive to choose a lot from.
