I have always felt that the SR-71 was (and is) one of the most amazing engineering feats, ever. It was a huge, enormous, gigantic quantum leap in technology in the time before computers! It required some fantastic comprehension of problems that had never been faced before in ultra-supersonic flight. It wasn't just a little better than previous planes. I don't think that we will see another such giant step in aviation technology in our lifetimes. It's been the fastest plane in the air for how many years now? 3 hours, 47 mins London to L.A. - 67 minutes USA coast-to-coast!
