Ben Kenney's Lakland

Seeing Ben got me interested in bass some odd years ago, Ive always been interested in his gear. Incubus is my favorite band, seen em live, blah, blah.

So, what are the details on this bass? I grabbed both photos of it, and a clip. Im loving it. Possible to get one like this as a Skyline?

Jerry Scheff bass with standard pickups rather than lipsticks? Or something totally different?

My wife is more of the fan than I am
but I ran across this kid playing the bassline to a song called "Hillikus" on YouTUbe
and I never realized how funky some of their stuff was

Oh yeah, super funky. The older stuff is a lot more rock/hard rock, but Dirk did lots of slapping and finger funk.


Im a bigger fan of Bens though.. but, shhhh.

That looks like one of the early, since discontinued models. Either a 4-76 or a 4-63 IIR. I'm sure Dan Lakin could build you one just like it

I would love to save and buy one, but I just cant afford a USA Lakland, neither new nor used.

Now, a Skyline, I would be willing to work and save for as its possible. I would definitely do that, too. I can give almost full credit to Ben to giving me my main love and passion.

its a 4-94 dual j, it's passive with lindy fralins. i have one myself, and it's my #1. they are not however available in skylines.

actually a 4-63 is an active version with 2 bart jazz pickups. and the 4-76 is the bass in my avatar.

I think the possibility of custom stuff in the skyline series would be a bit far fetched. I'm afraid that if you wan't custom, you need to pay custom. Having one as skyline would be equal to squier custom shop instead of fender.

And bummer on the Skyline thing.. that sucks. Big time.

Lemme ask you this.. Could one get a Jerry Scheff model, but have them put normal Js and wire it passive? That would be the same thing, in a sense, right?

Side note: The Scheff (now discontinued) used the same body as the 4-94/44-02 series, but it also had its own preamp (a Fishman, I think).

Save up, Jordan! Used US Laklands can be had at pretty good prices sometimes.

Scheffs have different pickup positions.

I would because he was recently talking about how he finally got an XS 35" 4 string Lakland.

Not to say that this ISN'T a 35" bass he just made it sound like the 35" was new to him.
