Bergantino B|Amp-Power and Versatility (and cost-efficiency!)

A lot has been written on this site about the relatively new Berganitno B|Amp, specifically as to its power, light weight, and incredible clarity. You've heard about its flatness, the way it takes to EQ, and the way it gives you the sound of your bass, only louder!

I am proud to say that Jim Bergantino himself has allowed me to talk about features of the amp that have been known by very few up to this point. Jim is currently working on a capability that builds right into the amp an overdriven tone and a distortion tone.

My contact with this came about when I wrote to Jim a few weeks ago telling him that my originals band had a few songs where some distortion was going to be required, and I mentioned I was going to buy a well-known pedal and so I was soliciting his advice about whether I should put that before the input or in the effects loop. His response to me was pretty surprising.

Jim said that he was working at that very time on putting those kind of capabilities right into the amp. He told me that he had worked up an alternate firmware that if I installed it into my amp would give me the capability to have a distorted sound with no pedals.

With a little further discussion, Jim sent me the firmware version with the distortion capability built in. You are not stuck with the distortion sound, rather a) it can be turned on and off with a change in one of the programming settings, and b) when on, you can dial in the amount of the distortion, in this beta version, by turning the aux input gain, which gets repurposed.

I found the distortion delightful. It is not over the top crazy, rather it allows you to dial anywhere from a very mild set of overtones up to a fat, crankin' sound. It was perfect in my band for carrying the song when both guitar players were out on their own excursions.

I reported back to Jim how much I liked the sound, and the easy way the change was accomplished. Jim had just emailed me the new firmware (I presume the final version will be available as a download on the website). I put it on a USB drive, which I then hooked up to the USB slot on the front of the amp. I powered the amp on, holding down the Program button, and boom it was done. I literally was expecting it to take more time. If it took five seconds, I'm shocked. You then power cycle one more time and it's ready to rock (literally).

I reported back to Jim how great this was, when he decided to throw more complication in my life. He had an additional sound, one which he described as an overdriven sound. I tried it too, and the worst part is that now I can't decide whether I want to use clean, distortion, or overdriven. They're all fantastic each in their own way.

The other amp I use is my Sadowsky SA200. I keep the gain at or slightly above the volume on it so I get that delicious warm tubey sound. Now I can't tell you that I've done a blind A/B testing between the two, but I can swear to you the tube/overdrive version is absolutely in the same ballpark. Don't forget that you have the option of dialing up more of the harmonic overtones or less, to taste, at your discretion. I can only tell you that both the distortion and the overdrive are very natural, traditional sounds that an old guy like me is very comfortable with. These are not harsh, digital sounding crap, rather everything feels and sounds very analog.

Right now, the only difficulty is the way you turn the settings on and off, but Jim is working on a simple user interface where you will very easily be able to make these adjustments. Even better, he tells me the memory settings will also be able to lock in what you're looking for, so for example you'll hit memory one, and it will have the EQ, the overdrive selection, and the amount all ready to go.

To me, this is a breakthrough of the first magnitude. Not only did it save me, and it will save many others $300 for a good pedal (really, there will be no reason to look any further unless you need the most metal of tones), it also indicates the way for the future where Jim can give us many other options and capabilities that you have needed outboard solutions for in the past. There is at least one more obvious possibility that I'd rather not discuss at this time, but I'm sure you can come up with at least one or two things that could be done from here. Actually I would imagine the future is only limited by Jim's time and our money.

I thought that given its capabilities, the B|Amp was reasonably priced when it came out. It's even more so when you knock 500 bucks or so of its effective cost to me, because of what it's able to save me from purchasing.

I guess I can't resist fanboying a little. The B|Amp has ample power, fantastic tone, and now a sea of versatility coming in the future. I suspect this amp is a fantastic solution for a whole bunch of bass players out there with a multiplicity of demands, especially those like me who run the gamut from worship music to a modern country fill-in to musicals to my modern rock with some psychedielic jam elements originals band. This amp is versatile enough to meet all those calls.
 
I definitely invite others who have been working with Jim and trying the firmware out as to their comments, and it would be great if Jim could chime in and give his thoughts on what is left to be done with respect to any tone adjustments or UI issues.

Jim, my open comment on the tone: Don't change anything. Both options are fantastic as is.
 
I'm very interested in hearing responses also from those who haven't tried the distortion firmware and how it may affect their interest in the amp.

I'm not a distortion guy, but I've tried the firmware and it is very versatile. At lower settings, it adds some thickness that the tube guys would appreciate. When cranked, it breaks up without becoming harsh or obnoxious.

I lIke the amp the way it is and probably will not use the overdrive feature, but it's there if I need it. It adds a dimension to the amp that may increase its appeal to a broader market.
 
This sounds very welcome to me. Although I'm not a full on overdrive/distortion guy I do love a traditional sound from a GOOD valve amp and if it gets in the same ball park as a SA200 then that is interesting. I look forward to more info and hopefully some sound clips.

This is a great idea. I assume you saw the recent great videos they put on their site about an introduction to controls on the amp which included clean sound clips. I'll ask if they're going to put some up themselves, and if they're not, perhaps I'll do so.

Cool. Yes I watched the videos last week. I was quite familiar with the amp spec anyway but the clips were good. I used to own a Berg IP and with the right preamp (like a Summit) I could get a nice traditional warm tone. I am interested in the B|Amp but I do wonder if I'm able to get a similar sound. Most opinions seems to suggest it's quick, clean and precise... which is also good to have but I tend to drift back to wanting some tube 'depth'.

First I would like to thank you, Munji, Greg (Rocket Music), Steve, and Tom for allowing me the opportunity to bounce several variations of these Overdrive/Distortion circuits off of. I think there were several times that Mungi got a new variation before he even had a chance to load and test the previous one. In fact, he has a folder and system in place on his desk top enabling him to keep track of all the variations I hit him with! (BTW, glad to hear your doing great and getting back in the "game"!)

The process has been a lot of fun and also very informative. I spent a lot of time researching the various characteristics which give tube amps their sonic qualities. The quick answer is there is no simple or single aspect to an all tube amp that gives it its character, but rather a culmination of many aspects inherent in the technology. I would also like to point out that much of the sought after tube qualities is due to how it sounds when driven into clipping or distortion (i.e. non linear), as opposed to when it is running in its linear range. One of the biggest difference between solid state and tube clipping is how severe or gentle the two different technologies clip. High negative feedback in most solid state designs create very sharp corners in the clipped signal creating many high, odd order harmonics which are so far removed from the note that they sound disconnected and raspy and not very pleasing, where as tube amps with their softer clipping create lower order harmonics which sound more connected to the fundamental of the note and thus more pleasing to the ear. Then there's even and odd harmonics. For example, most tube amps' front end is a series of single ended, class A biased triodes, which when over driven clips asymmetrically, producing moslty even harmonics, which sound more associated or connected to the fundamental note, adding some thickness and richness to the note. Further down the chain in the output stage is typically a push pull configuration, which produces symmetrical clipping when over driven. Symmetrical clipping contributes odd harmonics giving more edge to the note. Then there's the output transformer which also produces symmetrical clipping when driven into saturation lending even more odd harmonics to the mix. Also, the output transformer, due to low negative feedback, has higher output impedance which interacts with the impedance curve of the loudspeaker it is driving and produces non linear distortion. In other words, its output response will "mimick or mirror" the impedance curve of the speaker it is driving, which is anything but flat! So where the impedance is higher (think impedance bumps in the low end of speaker impedance curves) it will have more output, and less where the impedance is lower. This is one of the major reasons tube amps tend to sound warmer than their solid state counterparts. You can get upwards of 3-6db more relative low end output without even touching a tone control! There are many other aspects of a tube design which contributes to their signature tone, but the most important point I can make is thanks to Fourier analysis, every aspect of tube, transformer, even tape head distortion can be explained and shown in measurements. There is no black magic.

One of the challenges I had when designing the overdrive/distortion circuit for the B|AMP is what am I going for? A natural sounding overdrive signal typical of most preamp stages in tube amps just to give a little texture and harmonic richness to the note, an all out tube screamer type fuzz/distortion pedal, or maybe something in between. So far, I have done the former with one additional circuit, as Kevin describes, having a little extra distortion sprinkled on top, but still very musical and not over the top fuzz or distortion. Most of my testers have said if they want any kind of overdrive or distortion, they want it to be more subtle and not sound like an all out fuzz box. I concur at this point. My thoughts are that if a player really wants that much of an effect, they would probably be best choosing a pedal of their choice and just adding it to the front end where they can adjust it to taste and switch it in and out as desired.

As Kevin has also stated, there is still some work to be done designing the user interface for this. I will be reaching out to him and others who have been involved in the process for their input and feedback. It's important that the effect can be adjusted and accessed quickly and easily. As for foot switches, etc., without making any promises or guaranteed delivery dates, the technology in the B|AMP will allow us to do either a Bluetooth foot switch or even an IPad app if we so choose. I'm leaning more towards an IPad app, (although Munji is not an Apple guy! ;-}). but again, I don't want to make any promises just yet, but just let you know the technology is already designed into the B|AMP and available to us once we decide.

And just quickly regarding some comments about the B|AMP being too clean. It's been interesting as well as informative to read that some B|AMP users, when using other amps whose baked in voicing, in conjunction with their effect pedals and basses, led them down a path of constant knob twisting and never seeming to allow them to reach their desired tone or even being able to distinguish one bass from another. It's like going to a restaurant and ordering chicken soup only to find out it has too much salt in it. You can't remove the salt so you add pepper and any other spice you can get your hands on to try and get rid of the overbearing salt flavor, only to find out now you have a soup with too much salt, pepper, and every other spice from the rack you threw at it. In fact, at this point, chicken is the last flavor your tasting from the soup! My point is, I truly believe it's a lot easier when you know where you're starting from, to get to where you want to go. Also having a more neutral amp will bring forth any intended or natural voicing from any effects, basses (tonal woods), strings, etc. upstream of the amp without imparting its own colorations on top of it. Having a voice baked into your amp right out of the gate, IMO, will usually lead to more knob turning and frustration than not. This was my guiding philosophy behind the design of the B|AMP, and along with its profile system, I wanted to give the player a blank canvas to build their tone upon, and not impose any preconceived or baked in voicing from which they may never be able to dial out or overcome.

Yeah I would definitely try to get it to work with an app. TC Electronic has been doing this for a few years with an app, you just beam whatever effects you want over to the amp. Overdrive, compression, octave, whatever. If you have an app you can give TC a run for their money!
 
I just bought a BAmp and 2 HDN112s and I am very excited about this news. Please, please make it foot-switchable. There are times when I want to switch distortions mid-song - not sure how that would work in an app.

On the TC amps, the app is just for beaming the effects to the amp. Adjustments are made with the controls on the amp, and on/off is done via the footswitch.
 
This amp has a lot going on under the hood and seems very well thought out. It is optimized for use with Bergantino cabs but how well does it work with other brands - a pair of Genzler BA12-3's for example?

It works great with other cabinets.

I use it several times per week with an Accugroove Tri 112, and with a Sadowsky 410 using the normal settings, and it sounds fantastic. The fact that it has a special capability with Bergantino cabinets in no way affects how good it sounds with cabinets of other provenance. With the cab you mentioned, you might want to give it a try with the HDN 112 setting (since that's also a neo 12) just to see how it sounds, but I can assure you it will be fine with the general selection.
