Double Bass Bergantino HG310

Still in the learning curve for the HG310. I agree Steve Doner, apples and oranges. The rear firing speaker plus sealed cab is a different experience. Played a few more gigs w HG310 since the last post, I dig it. Takes different EQ than my typical, expected I guess. Still wonder if the HDN210 might have been better for my situations, but not being able to demo the speakers on gigs, have to commit one way or the other. My goal was to improve tone and contain sound on quiet gigs... the kind we hate to play... AND do everything a 210 can do with more power from the amp due to lower impedance. Not asking much ; )

BTW I did get a B|AMP.... very cool. 1 week before the Forte HP was debuted...... grrrrr..... Jim kept good wraps on that. Think the feature set with adjustable centers, tweakable effects etc is better for me. Bet a B|AMP HP might be coming some day....

Has anyone had the opportunity to play upright through a variety of HGs? I'm very curious how they handle and which one might be the best suited for 3/4 double bass.

Hi--here's my take of using the HG310 for upright found over at the Club Bergantino thread--I ended up also picking up an HG410 for larger stages and my upright.

I am now a true believer...

Long time user of Bergantino cabinets (HDN and CN lines) and more recently the B/Amp. I'm mostly a jazz player, being a doubler on electric bass and upright bass. Over the last couple of years, I've been generally using the B/Amp for electric performances and my other amp (Eich T-1000) for upright work. That said, I recently picked up an HG310 and while it sounded pretty good with the T-1000, I wanted to see how well it would match up with the B/Amp, particularly how well the HG310 cab profile would work to bring a bit more sparkle to my upright sound than I was hearing with the Eich.

Had a chance last night to test the B/Amp HG310 combo with my upright. The gig was at the Sheba Piano Lounge on Fillmore Street in San Francisco, one of the last real jazz clubs left in the Bay Area (in addition to the glorious SFJAZZ Center.) I've played here a dozen times with the upright and various Bergantino cab combinations and the Eich. Last night blew all those other nights away! One of the many challenges with amplifying my upright is how to neutralize wolf tones and other overtones present when a large acoustic chamber vibrates. In addition, my upright presents a darker tone profile with some profound mid range bumps that tend to muddy speaker output. I've been able to neutralize some of these bumps to a certain extent with the Eich, but the B/Amp provided a whole new level of control. As soon as I changed the HI MID frequency down to 600k from where I usually keep it (800k), made further cuts to LOW and LO MID output volume, increased the HI and bright output volumes, and adjusted the HPF frequency up a bit, a whole new clarity and timbre emerged from the upright. I was able to play with great confidence, knowing that the bass was crisply cutting right through the mix at both higher and lower volumes. The sealed HG310 cab itself eliminated many difficult lower frequencies and the integrated horn/tweeter sounded incredibly seamless. My upright sounded so natural and assertive, clear and sweet, acoustic and present, all at the same time.

I realize how "overly" excited we bassists can get at times when we come across amp/cab/bass combos that truly sing, but I must admit, last night really opened my ears to what the B/Amp and Bergantino cabinets can offer bassists. I had resisted using the B/Amp with my upright for no good reason-now I am a true believer.

Looks like there may be an HG410 in my future (along with a B/Amp HP when/if it ever becomes available-hint, hint!)

You might also check Dan Robbins' take on HDN210 cabs for upright bass over at the Club Bergantino thread. I bought my HG310 from Dan who, it turns out, is now a true believer of HDN210s for upright! Lots of great Berg choices here!

You know what, Ted, I actually have not used the HDN210 that much for upright. I tend to not need that much firepower on many of my gigs. I am using a Genzler acoustic array pro Gollihur combo With the matching extension speaker, or a Phil Jones 2 x 7“ on top for smaller rooms where I need more punch and less bottom. Ironically, i usually bring two cabs because it sounds so good, but for small rehearsals and stuff it’s nice to just take the 27 pound combo.

The upright definitely feeds back sooner on the HDN210 than the HG 310, but it’s pushing more lows and more air out the front. I still need to get my hands on a Bampand try out the profiles… I definitely still love the HG 310, but for me, the HDN210 (possibly times two) works better for the big electric gigs. Just a different function in my stable :)

If I had a roadie to swap cabs in and out of my car more often, I would have probably taken the HDN210 to a few more of my upright gigs…

I am actually playing Yoshi’s in Oakland next Wednesday, August 28, and I’m considering bringing out the HDN210×2 fo my upright for that big room… i’m sure I wouldn’t have to turn it up very much and it would be a very full sound…

Got it, Dan. So many good choices for us these days to amplify upright bass. Last time I played Yoshi's I used two HDN112 cabs for my upright-this was before I picked up the HG cabs. My upright bass sounded wonderful with those cabs as well. I usually put them up off the ground on milk cartons to reduce pesky low end rumble and I don't play loudly on that stage given their monitor system. Using the B/Amp also helps, as you can imagine. I'll be curious to hear how your HDN210 cabs sounded on Yoshi's stage.

Thanks @Dan Robbins and @ted burik for your input, I really appreciate it. I have the REF 322 combo and I've made the upright work through it but I really feel it's probably better for electric bass (in fact I'm not 100% convinced that I wouldn't like REF 2x112 better) But I'm not sold on either REF for the upright so thank you for your thoughts. I suspect the HG310 is really the best option for my needs.

Revitalizing this whole thread and no, I did not read all five pages … apparently these are no longer made. It seems to be a lot of Bergantino cabinets no longer made.

Does anybody know what’s going on?

Simple business decision or parts no longer available or … ??

I often joke that Jim Bergantino has discontinued more epic-level bass enclosures than most manufacturers develop over the lifetime of the company. I believe the two main reasons for this is that Jim is always trying to improve upon his designs, and that over time, many components made by outside parties (mostly talking drivers and tweeters) are no longer available.

I still own two HG310's, and they are a fantastic enclosure, good for both electric and double bass. They don't seem to love a low B from a 5-string (they don't break up at all, they just don't put out as much volume on the super low notes), but for E on up, they are amazing.

So the question is - if one were to buy a used Berg cabinet - which one would be prudent?

There’s a maybe-overpriced HG(?) 312 on eBay which has my eye … I don’t need the Low B but a Low D is needed.

I think 1 great cab would do me for my last 19 years on stage-earth … and 52# for that one seems right.

A single HG312 will cover a lot more ground than a single HG310.

Yea - I’m real tempted … and I don’t blow speakers often - can’t think of the last time … still it’s a pig in a poke and it’d be nice to know there’s a suitable spare/replacement. I sent a note to Berg’ but haven’t heard back - heck they’ve had the whole weekend (j/k)
