Bergantino NV158? ???

Not at all, knowing JGR's tone goals from is clips, etc.. The NV215 was IMO all about fat, relaxed, R&B type performance. If you want a ton of mid punch, like the NV610, the little Bag End 15's will get you there in at least some ways. I found the NV215 almost the definition of 'not aggressive'.

While I thought it was a great sounding cab, I sold my NV215 after owning both it and the NV610 at the same time because I'm also a player who is specifically after mid punch and aggressive tone. If the NV115 sits between those cabs I'm looking forward to trying a pair.

If you dig Duck Dunn.... the NV215 is quite something IMO.

Sounds like Jim is voicing the NV156 kind of in between those two 'extremes'.

I always saw the NV215 bringing what I might call old school fundamental lows with modern performance..........meaning didnt break up or crackle? I always prefer the low tones of a bass. I played modern rock for a long time. Unfortunately what I learned is that with dual guitarists and modern music, that low fundamental that I loved would get walked on by the mesa guitar amps and sometimes lost. Now I understand 10's/12's more and midrange. That is why my current rig has been the db 112's and the thunderfunk.

I am anxious to try this new cab, NV115, or the hd212 with the tfunk and the mesa m6. I think that might do it for me? Although one could always argue not to fix something that isn't broken............:help:

I am blessed with guitar players that play small "toaster oven" size amps and keep things very manageable. We always stay out of each other's way, so I get all the room I could ever ask for. I'm lucky!!

Gotta say - while I haven't played the new NV115, I can say I'm generally not a fan of the TFunk with a sealed design. I have tried the HD212 though and think it would be a really great pairing with the TFunk (though only tried it with my Walkabout) - the big low end would augment the mid focus of that head beautifully. And both amp and cab are really sweet and musical. Can't imagine them not sounding great together

Just to clarify, I've had all three of the NV's and the Bag End stack simultaneously for several years. I think all of the NV's are overall great cabs, and could get by with any one of them, and I am very fortunate to have owned them all. That said, the NV412 is by far my favorite. I prefer it, my S15D stack, and more recently my own JGR 15/8 design over the NV610 and NV215. Thus, I recently let the NV215 go to fund other projects and free up some space since it and the 610 don't get much play time.

It sounds like the updates made with the new NV15/6 address some of the areas I found a bit lacking, and I could definitely see a pair of them making their way back into the sound lab.

Because we were swapping through so many amps and cabs, we stuck with the two basses Steve brought along - his alder/maple Sadowsky JJ 5-string and his ash(?)/rosewood Mbass JJ 5-string.

The amps we used included Steve's three Genz-Benz heads (Shuttle 9.2, ShuttleMAX 9.2, Streamliner 900), Fender Super Bassman 300, Mesa/Boogie Titan V-12, Mesa/Boogie WalkAbout, Aguilar DB750, Kern IP-777 (through the DB750's power amp section), Orange Terror Bass 500, and GK MB Fusion 500.

A few of these amps did seem to prefer the 15/6 (Kern IP-777 and Titan V-12), and - when pushing a heavily overdriven tone - the Super Bassman and Orange seemed to really shine with the NV215. Note, we probably could have achieved equally good results with these amps pushing the NV115, but they seemed to click a little more quickly with the 15/6 and NV215, respectively.

That being said, the overall impression was that with most of the other comparisons, the NV115 (particularly the one with the newer Eminence driver) stole the show. I can see where some folks would prefer either the ML-112 or the Hathor, but IME/IMHO, the day belonged to the NV115. My initial skepticism that it would be too small (for a sealed enclosure) to get very loud or hit very hard down low was pleasantly dismissed.

Jim told me to not be afraid to push the NV115 with some serious power (which several of these amps can really deliver, and which the NV115 soaked up without complaint), but what really impressed me was how well they responded with the relatively modest powered WalkAbout. Even driving one 8-ohm cab, the WalkAbout was able to generate an impressive amount of volume. Two NV115's and a WalkAbout could cover a LOT of gigs, and the tone was glorious! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

I would also like to point out that the Terror Bass 500 (set to 8 ohms, and cranking out 500 watts) into one NV115 was also amazing! Crazy volume, big tone, TIGHT lows, man, that was a rig that sounded a lot bigger than it looked! :D

The Super Bassman sounded great through the NV115. The Vintage channel sounded decidedly "right" with either the NV215 or the NV115, with the tonal differences as mentioned above.

These cabs would go great with a 100T, for sure.

And now even more...BTW, I liked the 1,000 watt Terror quite a bit more than the 500...have you tried one? SERIOUS horsepower. Dynamic range - ridiculous!

So how would this rig (new NV115 /Orange) sound with an MTD and/or a fretless? I kind of like the sound of my MTD through an old school rig.

I gotta go phone Jim and see if he has some orange or white tolex...

:hyper:

Tom, you're the best, man. Thank you.

Cheers,
Cameron

Raw volume,,, are you guys saying this would compete with a HD212?Which If I remember right Tom touted as the ultimate one cab solution.

I love the thought of this I'm just worried that I "need" 2 so often that I'd rather lug one large format NV. Which has wheels and adds up to less than 2 of these.

I have a old smaller IP112=ex and a NV425 that I use a M9 with.

Being a single driver in a sealed cab, there's only so much SPL you are going to get; I'd expect a majority of folks would want to run a pair, but admittedly my volume wants/needs are a bit skewed towards the louder side of things. Going from a single cab to a pair always seems to be much more than the sum of parts though. Three would be even better... ;)

you are very lucky indeed!

The thunderfunk works well with the NV215, however I use the Carvin B1500 with the NV215 to give it alot of juice!

Odd, I had the NV412 and liked it the least of the three....it took pedals well but did'nt have the low end of the NV215 to my ears.......

Three NV115's? Wow now that sounds GREAT to me!

Actually, I have both at the moment, and I'm debating if I am going to keep them both. There is not much real world volume difference between the two, IME/IMHO, though the Terror Bass 1000 does have a more clean tone, and the 500 is a little more grindy. Of course, this could be the preamp tubes, as well. I have not tried swapping them yet.

Well I'm home after this great weekend of testing.. I have to thank Tom for allowing me to check out some cool gear, my 3 local bass player/good friends for their opinions and the fine Ohio State Troopers for the speeding ticket... I can't complain though, I was flying....
After this weekend of a couple of gigs, one with a rock fill-in and one with my regular gig I love the cabs.. Very nice warm, articulate tube tone.. I used 2 for the rock gig and one for Saturday nights corporate, even though one would probably be plenty for either... I brought the one cab for my local guys to check out Saturday afternoon for a matinee gig.. Nick the bass player was using a Ampeg PF-500 with the Ampeg 15" fliptop cab.... The PF-500 sounded fantastic with my cab, it was better than the Shuttle 9.2 I brought...I owned a PF-500 that I was using with an HT-112ER and did not like it for that cab, maybe the sealed cab is were it's best suited... All 3 guys thought my cab sounded great and their opinion was it has more punch in the low mids and sounded deeper...

Tom,
Is there any plans, or is Mr. Bergantino open to the idea, to restock the NV215? maybe with the "new Eminence" design? It boggles me why such a renowned coveted cab has disappeared. Ive been "this close" to snagging one so many times. With all the attention the NV115 is getting, and many people saying they want TWO, why not reissue the original... or an updated version? Im obviously not the only guy looking for a well designed sealed 215 in the world!

I would keep your glass eye open in the near future. It looks like some of these guys will be unloading a few. Sorry, mine is not going anywhere.

Jim has no plans (at this moment) to reintroduce the bigger NV series cabs.
