So as promised I used the NV115 at my loud rock band (HighTest) rehearsal tonight. Our regular (loud) drummer is back -- he was out for a month due to knee surgery. It was nice to play with the sub, who didn't hit nearly as hard. But Gregg is a very good rock drummer, and another benefit is that I really got to push the NV115 especially hard (the guitarist is always too loud, but even louder when Gregg's hitting).
In short, the NV115 kept up surprisingly well. I pushed it with one channel of my Stewart World 2.1, ~400w into 8 ohms. My normal rehearsal rig is a pair of HS210 cabs, which get ~650w @ 4 ohms. Tonight the -3dB light was flashing nearly constantly toward the end of rehearsal when we were loudest -- it rarely does that with the HS210 stack. Even though I suspect I was pushing the NV close to its limit, I couldn't detect any breakup from the cab, not even when I ran a fully clean tone. I was getting some compression, but that's a sealed box quality to some extent regardless.
I would never say that one NV115 could match the volume of my 2xHS210 stack, but I was impressed with how well it performed, even down low on the B string. This convinces me that it'll be more than enough for my other bands who don't play as loud. Another nice feature is that I noticed very little change in tone when moving from standing right in front of the cab to about 12 feet away, moving around the garage as much as I could. Sure, the top end faded a bit when standing close, but no big deal.
I alternated between two preamps, my beloved JGR v1 and an SWR Interstellar Overdrive. I tried clean and then kinda-dirty with each one. Results were always as expected, and even though treble response goes higher than the NV610, dirty tones still sounded great. The NV115 is definitely not a typical 15" cab. It seems amazingly flat, with the sealed box qualities of course, and I definitely prefer mid driver to tweeter. On that note, I only brought one bass, my favorite Sadowsky P-bass, and it was strung with Elixirs. The mid driver made it easy (for
me) to tell that the strings are coated. I often use Elixirs in summertime because they stand up to my profuse sweat (I hate having to change strings after just one gig), but next rehearsal I'm going to use uncoated SS rounds, which give my favorite tone. I suspect they'll sound wonderful through the mid driver, but it'll be nice to confirm.
I didn't get a chance to try an NV115/HS210 stack, but I'll do that next week. My idea is that for some situations I can use the HS210 as a speaker stand, and plug it in if the gig is louder than expected.
I'm tired and rambling, but to sum up I am thrilled with the cab. One NV115 would not be enough for a typical HighTest gig, but the NV610 is my go-to cab for those anyway. The NV will be plenty for my other bands.
P.S. I got the NV115 cover today. All Berg padded covers are the bomb, but the embroidered logo on these put them over the top... too cool!
