Bergantino NV158? ???

First gig report. Long, narrow ~100 seat restaurant/bar. A challenge to fit our 8 person oldies group. But it's a mile from home and our genre attracts an upscale, appreciative audience that wants to start and finish early so it makes for a fun, easy gig.

Settings when I pulled the amp out of the bag today (gain button out). I thought I had the bass at noon so it may have moved in transit.

The first note at sound check, with the master at 9 o'clock, generated looks from the entire band. "Too loud?"..."yes".

I almost got it back to 9 by the end of the night but I cheated by boosting the input volume and going full P pickup which is stronger on this bass. Regardless, it had plenty of volume to spare.

When side by side with a Thunderchild 212 in the practice room it's obvious that the 212 has more sound going on, although it's hard for me to know if it's a fair comparison with one cab being 4ohm and the other 8. But at the gig the NV has a 'turn it on and you're there' kind of thing. No muss, no fuss, it gave what I want without a lot of fiddling. Solid fundamental, no boominess, which in this room has been a problem in the past. Rich mids and, even though I had to stand beside the cab rather than in front of it, I could hear some of the preamp break up when digging in later in the evening. A very pleasant experience.

Two thumbs up.

Gratuitous shot of cute bartender.

I gigged my NV115 twice this weekend. Friday night was with my loud rock band, so I plugged in both the NV115 plus HS210. Again the NV was on top so I could hear it and not the HS. It sounded great, but not as great as the NV610.

Tonight (Saturday night) was with the Motown/classic rock band. I used my Sadowsky P with Brazilian board, strung with flats. It took me awhile to dial in a good tone: too many reasons to list here, the biggest being that I'm a roundwound kinda guy. But once I got it dialed in I was really happy: the flat-strung bass had a lively, resonant, musical tone that was wonderful for Motown/Stax R&B, classic rock and blues. I think I like it better than the NV610 for this application!

Oh... like last time I put the NV115 vertically on top of the horizontal HS210. This time I did not plug in the HS, but I still got plenty of volume from the NV even though it was an outdoor gig. I was going through FOH, but in this band I compete with Hammond B3 plus massive Leslies, and five horn players (in addition to guitar and drums of course): they're not as loud as my rock band, but they're NOT quiet! So, it was nice to know a single NV115 could handle it. Elevating the cab helped me hear it better, and I don't believe doing so hurt low frequency response.

P.S. Got myself a nice folding hand truck for load-in. It allegedly handles 275 lbs, far more than needed, but better safe than sorry. :)

Third gig with the NV115, this time all by its lonesome.

Okay, I'm trying to like flats, but it's not easy. It's even less easy in 100+ heat index conditions, they're either too sticky or too slippery. But once I got my tone and volume right, the tone is phat and a killer match for classic rock and Motown/Stax.

As for the NV115: I can't remember the last time I used such a small rig for a full gig... I'm not used to bending over to tweak knobs. :P But even outdoors, it kicked butt! I got FOH support of course, but check out the Hammond B3 rig:

You can kinda see the NV115 here, just right of the drum kit:

Great action pics. I said in the main Berg thread, I would love to pay with a horn section...ah someday. And yes, that's a great Keys rig that had to sound great, but I will take my 15 lb Hammond SK1 and 35 lb Kurzweil any day of the week over that combo. I am just too old to be moving a realB3 around these days.

The horns are lots of fun. :) So's the B3 with Leslies, but I'm with you: I'd never move all that furniture. A couple years ago I heard a Hammond electric (don't recall which model) that had fantastic B3 sounds.

Played with a 3 piece horn section for 20 years. An absolute must if you are playing the Motown-Soul material. Also lugged a B-3 around for many years. I miss the sound but not the schlepp !
