Bernard Edwards - Sadowsky Model

It was nice to see people remembering Bernard. He was a very nice guy. I remember making two basses for him. Both had figured maple tops on swamp ash. One had a maple fingerboard and the other had a rosewood fingerboard. I have no idea where the basses ended up after his death.

It seems like CHIC and Edwards got a lot more respect outside
the US, possibly because of the "disco backlash" we had
here in the States. It doesn't matter to me, though, Bernard
was a huge influence on myself and so many others. CHIC
had some great music that truly transcended the "disco"
label/stigma. :bassist:

He also played an Ibanez at one time. He collasped during that gig. He fell out on the "one" and came back on the "one. Now THAT'S groove! Also, something alot of people didn't know about him, he was a helluva pick player too! :bassist: Listen to Chic's "Everybody Dance". Killer solo!!!
Another tidbit: Johnny "Guitar" Watson also died in his sleep at the same hotel after after doing a gig on the same stage. He had cancer. He was also a killer bass player!

Man, some people are just born to groove. The rest of us have to try harder.

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know what Bernard's partner (Niles Rodgers, I believe) is up to lately? I know they both did some producing and layed tracks down for a lot of other people (ie; Steve Winwood). Just curious.

Bernard Edwards

Yeah, Bernard was a friend of mine. We would run into each other in studios, in the street. He would give me advice about a lot of things. He told me not to move to LA (I didn't listen :-)
I remember, around 1978, I saw Bernard on a Chic album cover with a BC Rich bass. It was white with this unusally shaped body. Anyway, the song "Good Times" was on this album and I thought it sounded so good, I ran out and bought a white BC Rich.
I got it home and started playing Good Times...I'm saying to myself, "This don't sound like the record........."
I met Bernard shortly after and told him I bought the BC Rich but couldn't get that cool sound. He said, "Man I didn't play a BC Rich on that album. I played my Fender Precision!" I said, "But you have the BC Rich on the album cover." He said, "Yeah, well the BC Rich looks good, so I take pictures with it!"
God rest his soul......

:D

A good friend of mine, Bill Holloman, plays sax for Chic and was on the gig at the Budokan the night Bernard died. He loved Bernard, as did everyone. Bill has a promo poster of that tour in his basement studio, and it's signed by everyone in the band, including Bernard.

I'm sure many are aware of this story...the Chic classic "Freak Out" was written right after Nile Rogers and Bernard were turned away from the imfamous Studio 54. Apparently they weren't on the guest list due to some snafu, and the folks at the door were either unaware or unimpressed by the fact that they had either co-written, or Nile had produced about 50% of the music being played there at any given time.

They headed back to Bernard's (or possibly Nile's) apartment and came up with the riff that would become "Freak Out". However, the original working title and lyric was "F*** YOU!"
