Well he sure had a tone like no other, that's for sure, whatever it was he was playing.
I also agree with JWilson's comment of about a year ago about disco. I was a kid right towards the tail end of disco when I first kind of started getting into music and it was getting a really bad rap at the time. Van Halen came along in '77 and almost single-handedly wiped out disco; both sides of the debate argued about whether that was a good thing or a bad thing. At the time, I thought it was a good thing, but I was also a dumb kid who was full of bullfeathers.
It wasn't until many years later after I became my current elderly self and a bass player myself that I realized what great music Disco actually was. And that Donna Summer deserved every single award she ever got, and Mr. Edwards was actually one of the best bassists of all time, and so on. I still feel regret even today at how wrong I was in my early teens, and how I should have listened to all that great music when I had the chance to hear it on the radio.
Now I'd give my eye teeth to play bass in Chic, especially with those two gals in the band...
Bernard Edwards is, IMO, one of the greats on the "Fender bass", even if he was playing something else. I wonder if he ever played a G&L, like an L1000 or 2000? That would have been something to hear for sure...
