He also played an Ibanez at one time. He collasped during that gig. He fell out on the "one" and came back on the "one. Now THAT'S groove! Also, something alot of people didn't know about him, he was a helluva pick player too! Listen to Chic's "Everybody Dance". Killer solo!!!
Another tidbit: Johnny "Guitar" Watson also died in his sleep at the same hotel after after doing a gig on the same stage. He had cancer. He was also a killer bass player!

I thought the same as you do now and was corrected. There's an interview available, where he describes his technique. He DIDN'T use a plec on "Everybody Dance". He had a kind of own technique, using the thumb and the index-finger LIKE a pic. According to the interview, a lot of the times a little bit of blood was involved.
Just like you, I was kind of convinced that he must have used a plec,maybe due to the heavy compression he used to amplify the attack.
Anyway, I simply can't play it like he did, neither with a pick or with my fingers. I love the man.
To me it seems, one of the greatest advantages of playing an instrument instead of just listening to music, is that it prevents you from allowing stupid idiotic FM-stations and Advertising to ruin and destroy music.
Hard to describe, but if I hear a FM-Station playing "Lost in Music" or "We are Family", I just feel hate and boredom.
If I take my bass and study his playing and become part of the music, the "Black Panther Party Fraction of Disco" comes alive again.
Even during my punk-time around 1980 I loved Chic as much as I loved the Clash and I remember how surprised I was, when the Clash showed their love for Disco, too.
