Edit: and I'll explain why i think that. They have said that the meaning is that the band is just a tool for them to express themselves. Which is what every band is, yet they have managed to in some ways overtly express that, yet also have the name taken at face value by most. And by some, ridiculed.

Also the irony of wearing a Tool t shirt is rife. "So..you're advertising the fact you're a Tool?' Or what?
