Okay...I'll admit it. One of my favorite basses is my Westone. It has one of those "80's" shapes...but sounds great and is as solid as they come. Besides...I have never seen another one like it....and I like being different...

It was a bit rude, I agree...sorry! The fact I play a P bass should tell you where I am coming from, and what my prejudices are...

But it wasn't intended as a personal comment. More as a comment on the Starship Enterprise approach to basses generally, which isn't to my taste. But I accept that it is quite difficult NOT to take such a gross parody personally, and I apologise for any annoyance caused.

Feel free to take the **** back at anytime (of the "Do P bassists have a central nervous system?" type, for example! Your "Whoops!" comment is appropriate, but a bit tame

Ive got nothing against fenders.The good ones sound fantastic.They just never really fit me.Plus most of my favorite bassist played a Jazz or a Precision.

it's ok, frost, don't be ashamed, I've owned 4 Westones myself, still own a fretless probably shaped like yours(with the most awesome active circuit I've ever heard!) and I miss my Quantum headless, the only bad one I ever played was a Pantera 5 string that nearly ruined my left hand..

There are a lot of good basses today:it all dipends on your style and on the kind of sound you need and like.
Anyhow,I have recently bought a SADOWSKY 4 with maple fingerboard and the new passive tone control:even if I didn't like Fender style basses a lot before trying it,now I am in love with this bass;it allow me to get the Marcus Miller sound,when it's active,and the Jaco sound (passive).I owned both Streamer(4str.w/EMG)and Thumb5:they had really "the sound of wood",but I sold them for the Sadowsky!

well brand really shouldn't matter i mean yah the majority of the replys where all with warwicks and i respect dat' they r great basses i'ld like to stick w/ my fender jazz bass but u should go to a music store and sit down with each bass guitar and play a few songs say to urself do u want this thing around ur neck for a few hours when either ur jamming out or ur putting on a lil' show but appearence should b ur last concern.

the best bass brand depends on what kinda music you want to hear. if you want a modern rock type sound, get fender or gibson. for punk, get ibanez. for metal, get esp. it all matters on what sound your looking for. personally i prefer metal/rock type sound but all my basses are ibanez

but ibanez is kind of an all around type brand so i guess it dont matter. --jr

FENDER ALL THE WAY!! unlike most bass companys, fender has something for everyone wether u are a simple standard p-bass guy, vintage, custom, or a newer deluxe active american V like me. to me, that is what makes a good company. all fender basses are well crafted and definatly last. the feel of a nice jazz bass is unlike another. FENDER HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Yeah, Fender has one something for me(a 60's Jazz) but all of the other somethings I have and/or want are DEFINITELY NOT FENDERS! Pedulla, Mike Lull, Sadowsky, Lakland.. No Fender made can compare to these in quality.. Well, not any Fender made since the early 60s..

I can't believe nobody mentioned Teisco Del Ray. I had a short scale, 4 pickup (square polepieces), pushbutton, 4 string in gloss green with a cool pickguard with curly-Q's. It was tight!

It's kind of neat to see the people being identified with different basses. Not to burst any bubbles but Jimmy Haslip sounds the same whether he's playing a Roscoe, old Tobias, new MTD or his old Yamaha

The same goes for Vic and AJ, granted these guys have nice basses, but...it ain't the bass...
A nice bass helps but it's only a small part.

Do ya think you wouldn't recognize Marcus on a Mike Lull?

I'm not a rich musician, so I like to play with cheaper instruments. I've Tried with a Fender Jazzbass, but it didn't work out for me, Too heavy, too ugly, short neck and no punch.
My own bass is a Yamaha rbx200, cheap, and easy to play, though the original pickup sucks, it still gives a nice sound.
